COT R BEDSTSEAD.
, i I TX? w V No. 919,865. r Specification of Letters Patent. Patented April 27, 1909. "Application filed November '7, 1908. Serial No. 462,439. To all whom it may concern. ,1 said bars embracingthe adjacent side posts Be it known that l, GEORGE. HOLDEN, s and sing ststionsnly connected therewith citizen of the United es, residing at Merl by screws, rivets or other suitable means, chnntville, County of .i'niden, State of-New 1 whereby Silld racks are firmly sustained and 5 Jersey, have invented it new hndusefulCot ell-enabled to endure the weightsnd strain 60 or Beds end, of which thehillowing' is :1 spvcii- J to Wllltll they. may .be subjected especially i when the bed is occupied. y l
li a tion lily invention oonsists ofn not or 'bedstesd, he teeth J ol the rocks have their openroving: o bed bottom or mattress frame, inns doe seated and of curved form, and which is adopted to be vertically adjusted the outer terininri-ls form the noses K, which '65 and inolinel for our purposerequiring:the 5 rise above the iol'izontnl diameters of said some, and menus lor preventing nn'proper openings l'or n purpose to be hereinafter disoonnection ol the l'sstening's for snid bot explained. 1 I tom or frame while so ad usted and inclined. At the corners of the mattress frame on '15 it lurt'hereonsists reeks ori the head and the underside thereof, are levers'L which 7 foot pieces ol e not orbedste id adopted for, are. pivotslly connected as at M with the engagement with m .sns on the bed bottom (side rails of the mattress frame B end-exor mattress frame for holding the hitter in l the end rails of said its vertn-slly :MljUSbtd position. Sild racks frame 111 the longitudinal direction of the l I 2o being: provided with means for lirlnly retainmg them on the rospertive pieces. t further consists of the novel eonstruo- 4 tion of the lovers that or ploy-ed, on the portions of said ends may be seated onthe, bed bottom or mattress frame, for engage teeth of the ranks (hand removedtherefrorm ment with rocks on the not or bedstead, as as required. I will he hereinafter described. The levers are turnfitlbl deflected lat -illy For t 10 purpose of mqihriniirg the invenfrom the pivotal ends forming thefoll'sets P, i'lilll, the oc-vompsnying drmvingr illustrates tho snme being adapted to shut a'gn ihstthe a. sntisl'm-torv reduction of tho srnne. to prsesides of the angular rnojnrhersQ as stops, said cot, so thot theirtree orhsn'dle ends N prowet respectively through and beyond-the head and foot standards thereof, Wherebv l 0 tree, but the important instrumentslities l members being lirlnlyconnected with"the' thereof may be varied, end so it is to he I rails of the frame B and so disposed that understood that the invention is not limited i When sold lovers are thrown back or out of to the sperilio :irrsngoimnt and organization operation, the ollsets P contact with said shown and desrrihod. I sides of the members Q, and so limit the nio- Figure i represents a perspective View of 2: )tion of the levers, as most plsinlyillustrsted not embodying my invention. Fig. 2 repre in l ig. sents a. persportiw View of a portion thereof The operation is its folloWs:--VVhen the on an enlarged smile. Fin: 3 represents :1 imittressfrmne is placed in the cot, it may partial bottom plsn View of s portion and or rest in position as usual, but the handle ends partial horizontsl section of another portion, of the levers protrude through the head and iorh-on'nn enlarged scale. Fig. 4 repinloot standards, whereby theynmy be grasped sents an elevation of a portion taken from so as to raise said frame to place it the interior of the oot. I
Sin'iilsr letters of reference indicate oorrel for hospital purposes, and then sustain the spending parts in the figures. frame as adjusted. The levers are moved heferring' to the drawingsz--A designates inwardly, and the frame is raised, the handle r cot, and B designates the bed bottom or ends of the levers ridin past the racks G lint-tress home thereof, both of which, exuntil the proper height is attained, when the eptint the features of my invention applied levers are moved outwardly over the noses of iereto, being of usual construction.
n the exterior or the side posts 0, D, of and the handle ends of the levers enter the is head and foot standards F, F, are veropeningsof ,the teeth and are seated on the "a y arranged metallic reeks G, which bases thereof, thus sustaining the frame. It tend inwardly respectively from the segwill now be noticed that said noses rise above ntal bars H as integral members thereof, the horizontal diameter of the handle ends of a the levers and so embrace and inclose the 1 ered to full extent on I claim as new and desire to secure 25 not having ed to engage stops on inner faces of said ends as guards, whereby should attendants of the hospitalor other institution in passing said handle ends strike the same in inward direction, said ends will 7 yield laterally to the blow or pressure im arted to them, but will remain station ari y in position, hence the levers will not be disconnected from the teeth on which they are seated, and so the frame B will. not be 1 dropped from the rack, which otherwise would be injuriousto a patient occupying said frame. It is evident, however, that when it is desired to lower the frame, it 'is sufiiciently raised, and the levers are moved inwardly over the noses of the teeth, so as to clear the latter, when the frame may be lowthe side rails of the cot i when the lever may be i or to partial extent,
set forth Having thus described my invention, what by Leti tersPatent, is: p
1'. In a cot having a vertically mattress frame, vertically arrange racks on members of the head and foot standards of l the cot,.and levers on said frame, said levers lateral offset portions and having theirhandle ends adapted to be seated in the teeth of said racks, said offset portions adaptthe frame to limit the motionof the levers and-the noses of said teeth bein constructed to inelose the sides of said en s to a height adapted toprevent improper lateral displacement of the levers movable from said teeth. v 2. In a cot having a vertically movable aged with the respective teeth, the opera- -yond the end of the tion and result being the same as previously and a member engageable in the teeth of said seated and provided with vertically chmgated noses, and levers on said frame, said levers having lateral offset portions and having their handle ends adapted to occupy said teeth and being laterally guarded y said noses to prevent their improper lateral displacement from said teeth said offset portions ada ted to engage stops on the frame to limit t 1e motion of the levers.
3. in a cot, a vertically frame, a rack on a vertical member of the cot by which said mattress may be sustained when in elevated position, which said rack ro ects on the exterior-of said member, sai plate embracing the latter and'being firmly secured thereto, combined with a lever pivotally mounted upon the under side of said mattress frame and having a lateral horizontal offset and an'extension beframe to form a handle rack.
4. In a cot, a mattress frame having a lever mounted thereon, said lever being adapted to be supported on a vertical mem ber of said cot and provided with a lateral offset and said frame having an angular stop against which said oii 'sct is adapted to abut.
5. In a cot, a mattress frame, a lever pirotally mounted thereon and having a lateral horizontal offset toward the outside of the frame and a longitudinal extension forming a handle, and an angular member betiwen which and the rail of the frame said lever is movable and with which the oll'set portion contacts when the lever is thrown out of op eration.
