Description

W. F. BERNSTEIN.
ADJUSTABLE REST FOR A BEDSTEAD 0R BEDLIKE SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-1B. I815.
Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS uNrTEp STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. IBEBNSTEIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR '10 BERN- STEIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A COR- PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTABLE BEST FOR A BEDSTEAD OR BEDLIKE SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 16), 191$.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VILLIAM F. BERN- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Rest for a Bedstead or Bedlike Support, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an adjustable rest for placing the body of a patient at different angles or height, for conveniently examining the condition of the same, or for certain operations or other surgical attention, said rest being adapted to be imposed on a bed-like frame with all of the supporting and resilient qualities of the latter.
It consists also of details of construction as will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as long as they are included in the scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of an adjustable rest embodying my invention, including also the adjacent portion of a bedlike frame adapted to support the same. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of a portion on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional detail showing the connection between one of the cross wires and the bar of the supporting frame.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the side rails of a bedstead, and 2 designates the foot rail thereof, said rails 1 being in the present instance tubular and connected by the brackets 3 with said foot rail.
4 designates a bed bottom which is connected by the resilient shanks of hooks 5 with the foot rail, it being evident that said bed bottom is adapted to be connected with the head rail which is not shown, the feature of itself being known.
Connected with and rising from the side rails 1 by the sleeves 6 are the columns or posts 7, on whose upper ends is mounted a head rest whose frame 8 is partly shown, also the bars 9 of the body-supporting frame which extends rearwardly from its axis on said columns 7, said frame having connected with it the ends 10 of the cross rods or wires 11, on which rods or wires may be placed a mattress forming an adjustable rest or rest attachment for supporting the body of a patient thereon, it being noticed that the bars 9 are so disposed that they are at the sides of the bed bottom 1 while the rods or wires 11 are above said bed bottom, it being noticed also that when the attachment is lowered and in normal position the rods or wires 11 rest on the bed bottom 1, the latter yielding suiiiciently and so forming a support for said attachment with the supporting and resilient advantages of said bed bottom, but when it is desired to elevate the body of the patient or place the latter in an elevated, inclined or oblique position for operating or inspection purposes, said attachment is raised as shown in Fig. 2, when as is evident, it is necessary to support it in said position. For this purpose, there is pivoted to the foot ends of the bars 9 by the sleeve 12 and bolt 13 the props 14: whose foot ends carry the brackets 15 extending therefrom and passing freely on the interior sides of the racks 18, said brackets having thereon the pegs 16 which project transversely outwardly therefrom in opposite directions and are so disposed as to engage either of the teeth 17 of the racks 18 which are secured to the side rails 1 of the bedstead and are set out therefrom, it being noticed that said ends of the props 14: are offset as at 19 so that when the props are in lowermost position they may rest on the said racks 18 when said pegs 16 will not enter said racks between the teeth 17, but when the rest 9 is raised on its axis on the columns 7 as has been stated the props may follow the same, and so when said member is at its desired height, the pegs 16 engage the respective teeth of the racks and so retain said member in its adjustment, as shown in Fig. 2.
When the props are raised clear of the racks, the members 9, l1 and said props may lower and so assume their normal positions.
In order to limit the ascent of the foot ends of the props, the brackets 15 have on their lower ends the laterally extending feet :20 which are disposed below the racks 18, and spaced therefrom that when said brackets are raised to the proper extent by the props, said feet abut the underside of said racks, thus providing stops for said brackets preventing further elevation of the same, and consequently of the props, and likewise displacement of the props from the racks, while, however, permitting the brackets to be raised to allow the pegs to clear the teeth so that the props can follow the movements of the rest in its adjusting elevations.
While I have used the words bedstead, bed-frame and bedbottom it is evident that the rest may be placed on and used in connection with a lounge, couch, divan, sofa or other sleeping or resting device of the kind, producing the same results.
H a \ing thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A rest for the body composed of side bars and tranverse-extending members, said bars having means for mounting them on the frame of a bed-bottom or the like, a prep for holding the free end of the rest in elevated position above said bottom, a rack on the frame of said bottom, the free terminal of said prop being provided with a laterally-extending offset, said rest being supported on said bottom when the prop is entirely disengaged from the teeth of said rack, a bracket on said prop depending fro said offset, and a peg on said bracket adapted to engage either of the teeth of said rack, said prop when in lowermost position being adapted to rest supported on said rack over said teeth, and place said peg on said rack between adjacent teeth thereof without descending thereinto, and likewise project said bracket laterally under said rack.
2. A rest for the body composed of side bars and transWisely-extending members, said bars having means for mounting them onthe frame of a bed-bottom or the like, a prop for holding the free end of the rest in elevated position above said bottom, a rack on the frame of said bottom, the free terminal of said prop being provided with a laterally-extending offset, a bracket on said prop depending from said offset, said rest being supported on said bottom when the prop is entirely disengaged from the teeth of said rack, a peg on said offset adapted to engage either tooth ofsaid rack, and a laterally projecting foot on said offset adapted to project under said rack and abut thereagainst as a limit to the ascent of said prop.
