UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. GEORGE w. LOUGHMAN, OF SOUTH BEND, 'iNDniN-A; CITIZENS LOAN TRUST & SAVINGS COMPANY EXEOUTQR AND TRUSTEE or SA'ID GEORGE w. LOUGHMAN, DEQEAISED.
FABRIC-ROLL-EDGE rno'rnc'ron.
- No. 919,607. H
and State ofIndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F abric Roll-Edge Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
TlllS invention relatesmo fabric roll edge protectors. One object of the invention is to provide a spool composed of separable parts designed to prevent colla sing of the rolls of fabric at their ends an also to protect theedges of the fabric.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a fabric roll edge protector embodying such characteristicsthat in addition to performing the usual functions of providing for suilicient space whereby cement, tacks and other articles may be confined within the roll without danger of loss through accidental displacement during shipment'or movement from one place to another, it' also provides for a device embodym but few parts with the head members he (1 in proper position through the instrumentality of a spring rod or bar.-
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consistsin the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ac and particularly;
companying" drawings, pointed out in the appended claims, it beingunderstood that changes ma be made in the form, proportion, size an minor details without departing from'the s irit or sacrific- 111 any of the advantages of t e invention.
11 the drawings :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fabric roll illustrat- Fi 2 is a face view of one of the end caps. ig. 3 is a face view of the other end-cap. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the locking rod prior to engagement with the end caps.
' Referring now more particularly to the ac companyin drawings, the reference character 1, indicates a fabric roll ofjany material and 2 and/3 the end caps each having a pro jectingl central portion 4 adapted to project into t e bore 5 of the roll 1 with its body portion arranged to engage the edges ofthe material or the ends of the roll, as shown. The end cap 2 has a central perforation-6 in its projecting part 4 and near the periphery Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Application filed April 17, 1908. Serial No. 427,672.
positively secure the-ca s in Patented A m 27, 1909'.
of the-projecting part 4 is a second perforation 7 there being a single perforatlon 8 in theprojecting part 4 of the end cap 3.
To lock the caps 2 and '3 against displacement with relation to the fabric roll, there is provided a locking bar or rod 9wh1'ch has one end bent laterally, as indicatedat 10- and then inwardly, as shown at 11, the laterally directed artlO being adapted to'form a head referabfy ead .10 and-part 11 practically forming a hook with the-bill portion 11 of the hook adapted to fit in the central erforation 6 of the cap 2, the body of the loc ing. rod 9' ass ing through the perforation 7. This 100 ing rod 9 is preferably bent intermediate its ends upon an incline, as indicated at 1 2, and the remaining body portion of the locking rod directed in the same plane with that portion thereof upon the opposite side of its bent part 12 and passing through .theperforation 8 of the cap 3. By reason of the bent part 12 of the locking. rod 9, the latter is rendered s ringy, flexible or yieldable longitudinally of its length,.so that when it is desired to place against displacement and especiall tlghtly in engagement with the ends of t e roll, in a manner hereinafter explained, the looking rod will yield longitu inall as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. *lo effect this yieldf able function of: the locking rod and to secure the caps against displacement, the rod is pulled upon at one end so as to exert a ull upon the cap 2 and cause the rod to yiel intermediate 1ts ends, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,'when the end of the rod op osite its hooked end is bent into curved or otl ier form, as indicated at 13, so thatits free extremity may be-engaged with the projecting part of the cap 3 and centrall thereof and referably substantiall in a inement with t e bill portion 11 of the li rod cannot retract to assume its normal position, that is, the position shown indotted lines in Fig. 1.
In order'to cause a yielding of the lockin rod intermediate its ends and to bend its end opposite to its hooked end, any suitable tool (not shown) may be used, but it is preferred to use such a tool as will pull upon the looking rod and also bend it in a single operation. By virtue of the ends of the rod beingsubstantially in alinement, there is an even pull upon the. end caps to insure their proper slightly-inclined, as shown, the 5 00k and so that the locking element having its body portlon bent inter- Y sides of the mediate its ends to cause the opposite ends of said body portion to lie adjacent opposite interior of the fabric roll and to render said bod portion yieldable intermediate its ends on y, one extremity of the looking element being bendable to provide a curved part terminatingsubstant ially parallel with the body portion for engagement with the adjacent cap to prevent retraction of the yieldable body portion when the latter is distended when the locking element is in operative position and to insure a constant pull upon the caps to prevent their displace 'ment.
2." A combined fabric roll and supporting spool protector consisting of ca s adapted to bear against the ends of the r0 and a looking element connecting the ca s, said locking element havin its body plortion bent intermediate its en s to cause t sides of t e interior of the fabric roll and to and thereby s e opposite ends of said bod portion to lie adjacent opposite render said body portion yieldable intermediate itsends only.
3. A combined fabric roll and supporting spool protector comprising capls bear against the ends of the ro and a locking element connecting the caps, said locking elementbelng bent intermediate its ends to render the same longitudinally yieldable, the bent portion being housed withln the roll between the caps when in operative position ielded by the caps and 'roll.
1 4, A combined fabric roll and supporting spool protector comprising cap-ls adapted to bear against the ends of the re and a looking element having its ends formed for connection with the caps, said locking element having a single bend intermediate its ends to render the same longitudinally yieldable and to exert a constant pull upon the caps, said bend bein housed within the roll between the caps w en in operative position whereby the bend is shielded by the caps. and roll the caps being dependent solely upon said bend for the maintenance of said pulling action thereupon and also upon the maintenance of said ends of the locking elements in firm engagement with the caps.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
