ROBERT H. WELTHALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNITTING-MACHINE NEEDLE.
To all whom 2'2 may concern:
I a citizen of the United States of America,
residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Knitting-Machine Needles, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof. y I
My invention 'relates to knitting machine needles and particularly to that kind of needles in which a butt is formed at or near the lower end of the needle shank by a fold in the metal of the shank extending at an angle to the shank. As heretofore constructed, needles of this construction have proved liable to breakage at the loop formed at the end of the butt for the double reason that the metal is particularly strained at this point and the blows of the picker and actuating cams fall upon the butt in such close relationship to the crease formed at the end of the butt that they are peculiarly apt to produce breakage at this point.
The object of my invention is to obviate or greatly diminish the liability of breakage of the needle butts and this I'accomplish by forming the butt with an outward extension consisting of a rolled, forged or pressed prolongation of the loop formed at its end, this having the double effect of relieving the strains caused by the abrupt bend of the metal andby the prolongation of the butt beyond the crease causing the blows falling fi (1 upon the needle butt to fall at a point removed from that which has been found to give rise to breakage.
Reference being now had to the drawings Specification of Letters latent. 7 Patented Aug. 22 1916 Application filed October 4, 1913. Serial No. 793,347.
-Figure 1 is an elevation of a needle or ordinary construction, and Fig. 2 an elevation of a needle embodying my improve-' 7 ment.
A is the shank of the needle having a butt formed by folding the metal of the shank against itself as shown at B B, D being the loop of this fold and C the crease formed .at the end of the butt.
A is an extension of the shank which is ordinarily recognized as preferable.
My improved needle, as shown in Fig. 2,
has the metal of the loop D forged or pressed outwardly as shown at D with the result of relieving the strains formed in the loop D in the process of bending it and also of so extending the butt beyond the crease C that the blows falling. upon the needle butt are measurably removed from said crease and less liable to cause a rupture at that point.
Having now described my invention, what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A knitting machine needle having a butt formed by a fold in the metal of the shank extending outward from the shank, said butt being further extended by a forged or outwardly pressed blunt extension of the metal of the loop formed at its end to there by increase the ratio of the length of the parallel side edges of the butt to thelength of the central fold line for the purpose speci- ROBERT WELTHALL.
