To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT V. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Bench-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.

Th1s invention relates to bench hooks or dogs which are clamped to and adjustably mounted on a carpenters bench to hold and serve as a stop for a piece of wood while being planed.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved device of this kind which will be simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and which can be easily and readily secured and clamped to a bench.

The invention consists of a bench clamp, and dog constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Referring to the drawing. Figure 1 is a view in pers ective showing the invention clam ed to a bench. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the 0 amp detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification of the clamp.

In the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the dog consisting of a flat plate having one edge formed with beveled teeth 2, and the other with a V-shaped recess 3, having in clined beveled edges 4. The late 1 is mounted on one end of a standard or post 5. To hold the dog in adjustable position on a bench a clamp is provided, as here shown, formed of a piece of sheet metal bent into a U-sha ed main portion 6, and having the latera ly extending arms or strips 7, cut and bent from the main portion, and having the inturned sharp ends 8. The U-shaped main portion 6 is extended beyond the arms 7, and bent inward and united at the point 9, and is then extended for a little distance as at 9 and clamped at its ends by a folded strip 10 having a tubular socket ortion 11, the folded strip 10 being securec to the extended clamped ends of the main portion 6 by rivets 12.

The U-shaped portion 6 is provided with suitable guides for the standard 5, and, as here shown, consisting of rivets 13 connected to the sides of the U-shaped portion 6. The standard 5 extends through the main portion 6 and is held against the rivets 13 by means of a set screw 14 bearing against the standard 5 and extending through a hole in the bend of the U-shaped portion 6, and

through a steadying block M fitting in said bend of the U-shapcd portion 6. By means of this construction the standard 5 may be raised and lowered in the U-shaped portion 6 to adjust the dog 1 to the desired position, the set screw 14 holding the standard 5 in adjusted position. The clamp is secured to a bench 15, by forcing the sharp ends 8 into the edge of the bench bringing the arms 7 against the edge of the bench and the extension of the main portion 6 beneath the bench, it being secured thereto by a nail or screw 16 extending through the socket 11 into the bench. By this means the clamp will be firmly and securely held to the bench. By means of the set screw 14, the standard 5 may be adjusted to bring the toothed edge of the dog 1 to the proper elevation to clamp strips of wood of dilfercnt thickness. By withdrawing the standard. 5 from the U- shaped portion 6 and turning the dog around the \l-shaped side of the dog may be brought in position next to the edge of the bench and the standard reinserted and held by the set screw in the main portion 6. The V-shaped side of the dog may be used to clamp an angular or round stick of wood.

In the modification in Fig. 3, a U-shaped main portion 17 is formed of sheet metal with lateral arms 18 and engaging sharp projections 19, and a joined extension 20 secured together by rivets 21, one of the ends of the extension being extended and bent to form a loop or socket 22 to receive a nail or screw to secure the clamp to a bench. In lieu of the rivets 13, the main portion 17 is provided with pairs of inwardly projecting lips 23, punched out of the metal and located similarly to the rivets 13, and serving as guides for the standard 5.

Having described the invention, I claim 1.. A device of the character described, consisting of a clamp having arms with puncturing ends to engage the edge of a bench, and an extension to project beneath the bench; means for securing the extension to the bench and a standard and dog adjustably mounted on said clamp.

A device of the character described, consisting of a clamp having a U-shaped portion with guides, and lateral arms with puncturing projections to engage the edge of a bench, and an extension to project beneath the bench; means for securing the extension to the bench; a dog with a standard movable on said guides; and a set screw clamping said standard against the guides.

A device of the character described, consisting of a clamp formed of sheet metal bent to form a U-shaped main portion With guides, and laterally bent arms With inturned puncturing projections to engage the edge of a bench and extended portions clamped together with a socket at the outer end to secure the extended clamped portions beneath a bench a dog and standard adjustable on said guides, and means for clamping the standard in adjusted position.

A device of the character described consisting of a clamp formed of sheet metal bent to form a Ushaped main portion With inwardly projecting lips serving as guides, and laterally bent strips with bent puncturing projections to engage the edge of a bench, and clamped extended portions with a loop at their outer ends adapted to project beneath a bench and be secured thereto; a dog with a standard extending through the U- shaped portion and bearing against said guides; and means for adjustably clamping the standard against said guides.

5. A device of the character described, consisting of a sheet metal clamp formed with a U-shaped portion and guides, and lateral arms with puncturing (projections to engage the edge of a bench, an an extension with a socket at its end adapted to project beneath a bench and be engaged therewith a dog with a toothed jaw and a V-shaped beveled edge jaw mounted on a standard movable on the guides in the Ushaped main portion and a steadying block and set screw mounted in said main portion, the set screw clamping the standard.
