Description

Letters Patent No. 91,99, dated .Tune 29, 1869.
mPRovED ANvIL AND vrsE CQMBINED.
The Schedule referred` to in these Letters Patent and makingpaxt Gf the lame.
To all whom fit may concern.-
Be it known that I, R. D. CHANDLER, of Fairhaven, in the county of Monmouth, and State of New Jersey, have invented a. new and improved Combined Anvil and Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following.
is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combination Vof two wellknown articles, the blacksmiths anvil and iron'vvise.
And the invention consists in attaching the` vise to the anvil, so 4that it is immediately under the eye of the blacksmith,- and extreinely'handy for him to use in heading bolts, and for other purposes.
Figure l is a top View of the anvil and vvise combined.
Figure 2 is a back-end view of the same.
Similailetters of reference indicate corresponding part-s. l
The anvil is made in the ordinary form, but its length may be somewhat greater-than the common anvil, for the purpose ot' giving room for the vise.
A is the anvil.
B represents the vise.
In forming the anvil, orifices are made through it for the screw C, and the steadybar D of the vise.
A screw-thread is out in the screw-orifice E, to engage with the screw, ora cavity may he formed in the anvil to secure a screw-nut, as maybe mostdesirable, but I prefer to cut the thread for the screw directly in the anvil, as seen in the drawing.
The bar .D slides hack and forth in its orifice F, as the jaw G of the vise is extended, or screwed up.
Detachable circnlar blocks hr h, may he attached to the anvil and jaw (as seen) by dowel-pins, or otherwise, for forming or bending wagon-tire, as seen in the drawing.
In forming the heads of bolts, orin upset-ting pieces of iron or steel, -thc vise arranged in this manner is extremely convenient, as snch work' must be donc while the iron ishot; and when the smith is obliged to carry the hot iron across the shop to use -the vise, the operation must necessarily he imperfect.A v
By'this arrangement he not only hasa solid foundation for his vise, but he'has the vise just where he wants it.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y v The anvil and vise, constructed, combined, andarranged, as herein described and shown.
It. D. CHANDLER.
