Description

' liluid gieten peut onta.
Letters Patent N 96,837, dated November 416, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentand making part of the same.
To all whomy it may concern Be it known that LERNEST QUAST, of Freedom', in the county of La Fayette, and State otMissour, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axes; and I do hereby' declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in woodchopping axes, whereby it is designed to provide an improved construction of axes, with removable bits, for the substitution of others, when. worn too thick and blunt for use.
The iuvcntifm consists in making ,the polls in two parts, divided in the planeet' the cutting-edge, and shaped so that when put together and joined by rivets, a groove will be thrilled', dovetailcd. at the base, for holding the bits, which are fitted toit, so that apart ofthe rivets will pass through the tongues fit-ted to the said grooves.
Figure 1 represents a side lview of au axe, made according to -my improvement.
Figure .2 represents a section of the same, taken on the line x-a: oi'Iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to make the polls in two parts, A, divided on the line B,and to securetheni with 'rivets or screws G. Y
For connecting the steelA bits D to these poils, I
shape them so that when the two parts are put t0 gether, a groove, E, will be formed, for the reception of a tongue, F, of the bit.'
These grooves I prefer to make dovetailed at the base, by raising the ribs G, in the rebates formed in each half of the polls, and I form corresponding grooves in the tongues F of the bits.
, I prefer to under-cut the shoulders H of' the bits, at; the base of the tongues, and fit the lips of the polls thereto; as shown in tig. 2.
I prefer to use four rivets for securing the two parts of the polls, two of them passing through the tongues of the bits.
The polls may be made of cast-iron, malleableized or not, or. they may be ot' fibrous metal, rolled into bars, and cutinto the proper lengths.
Then so constructed, the bits may be readily removed by removing the two rivet-s, which pass through the bits, and sliding the bits through the grooves.
Having thus described 'my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Axe-polls, constructed in two parts A, shaped and secured as described, and the bits, joined thereto by a tongued andgrooved connection, all substantially as specified,
. ERNEST QUAS'I.
