Description

A. `v'AN vLE-CK.
Improvement in CutterHeade.
Patented Feb. 20, i872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ALEXANDER VAN VLECK, OF JORDAN,- NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEADS.
To all whom it 'may concern: f'
Beitknownthat LALEXANDERVAN VLECK, of Jordan, in the county of Onondaga and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Matching-Gutters; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full,` clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a cutteruhead having my improved cutters. Fig. 2is a side view of atonguing tool, and Figs. 3 and 4 are front and rear views of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of the grooving-cutter, and Figs. 6 and 7 are front and rear views of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a kind of matchingcutters that may be described as follows The cutters are made each of one piece of metal, with a straight shank for the cutter-head, and an outer portion or curve, so shaped that flat grinding of the face of the tool on a line with its heel `gives always the same outline of cutting-edge necessary to make a tongue or groove, the outside of one of the projecting curved parts having `a groove that makes the tongue, and the same part of the tonguing tool having areverse form or rib.l The invention consists in an improved construction or form of these blanks'or curved portions from which the cutting-edge or outline is ground, bly which the tools make a cleaner out, and are r n with less resistance, as hereinafter more fully described. The cutter for making the tongue is shown by Figs. 2, 3, and 4, A being the projecting curved portion and a the shank.
The curved portion of the tool has a channel or groove, B, in its rear side, for making the tongue, and the sides of this groove are made concave, as shown at b, to give the tool clearance, by which it makes a cleaner out, is less liable to splinter the stuft', and cuts more freely through knots.l The grooving-tool is the same in general form, the projecting portion having the same curve as shown by C, but is made with a rib, D, on its rear side, that forms the groove-cutting part ofthe tool. The sides of this rib are also made concave, as shown at d. The projecting portion can be all Worn yout down to the shank, and the tool always retain the same outline of cutting-face by grinding its face in line with the heel of thetool. With a chuck specially designed for, the purpose, they are grooved and tted up rapidly, and with a small expenditure of labor. By these means the cutters do the Work in a superior manner, and from the improved clearance run easier.
I do not claim the construction of the cutters with a straight shank and curved cutting portion, as this is not original with me 5 but Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described improvement in matchin g-cutters, consisting of grooves b d in the cutting portions, substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention .signed by me this 21st day of August, 1871.
