UNITED STATES PAT NT ()FFICE.
WILBERT M. PALMER, OF ROCK FALLS, ILLINOIS.
TOOL FOR TURNING CHAIR LEGS, ROUNDS, AND THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,873, dated January 21, 1890.
Application filed January 11, 1889. Serial No. 296,076- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.- i
Be it known that I, WILBERT M. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Falls, in the county of WVhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Turning Chair Legs, Rounds, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to tools for turning chair legs, rounds, 850.; and the object of the invention is to provide a tool or cutter and a tool-guard that will prevent an irregular or deeper out than is necessary, and at the same time to provide a roadway or channel for the shavings, so as to prevent them from flying into the face of the workman.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a top view of my improved tool or'cutter. Fig. 2 is a detached top view of my improved guard. Fig. 3 is a view of a round or leg after it has been turned, and Figs. 4 and 5 are modifications of my invention. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tool and guard, taken on the line w 00, Fig. 4.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the figures.
A denotes the tool or cutter, made of the ordinarytool steel and bent while being annealed to form a cutting-edge which curves in opposite directions from the center of the said cutting-edge. Part of the body of the said tool A is cut out at a for the passage of the shavings. One end of the said tool is made smaller to enter into the handle B.
The tool A is provided with the guard O, which is made of any soft metal, all in one piece, exactly the same shape of the tool A, and enters the tool-handle B just over the tool A, leaving a small space between the said tool and the said guard for the passage of the shavings. This guard 0 not only forms a guide for the shavings, but prevents the tool from making too deep a cut, and
therefore regulates the cut of the said tool and prevents it from gouging.
The guard C is made with a smooth blunt front edge, so that when it comes in contact with the material it will not scratch or disfigure it; but, instead, it will tend to make the turned surface smooth and help to polish it.
The cutting-edge of the tool A may be made any shape, according to the shape of the round or leg to be turned, as clearly shown by Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings; but
a tool constructed as shown by Fig. 1 is found to be of great service.
Referring to Fig. 4, the tool and guardare made like the tool and guard shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except the cutting-edge of the tool, which is formed semicircular-like for the purpose of turning concave surfaces.
The form of tool shown in Fig. 5 does not differ from the tools as shown in the other figures, except as to its cutting-edge, which slants in opposite directions from the center of the cutting-edge and forms a series of pointed cutters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina tool for turning chair legs, rounds, &c., the combination of the body thereof, having a cut-out portion, and a cutting-edge curving in opposite directions from the center of the said cutting-edge, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a tool for turning chair legs, rounds, &c., the combination of the body thereof, having a cut-out portion and a cutting-edge curving in opposite directions from the center of the said cutting-edge, with a. guard having blunt smooth edges of the same form as the cutting edge of the said tool, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a tool for turning chair legs, rounds, &c., the combination of the body thereof, having 'a cut-out portion, and a cutting-edge curving in opposite directionsfrom the center of the said cutting-edge, with a guard adapted to cover the said cut-out portion, and the handle B, to receive the said tool and the said guard, substantially as shown and In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 10 described. presence of two Witnesses.
4. In a tool for turning chair legs, rounds,
