NUT LOCK. APPLIOATION rum JULY 17, 190e.

PETER PAUL .IARGICIQ OF BROOKFIELI), ILLINOIS.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed. July 17, 1908. Serial No. 443,983.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER PAUL JARGICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a s ecification.
My invention re ates to improvements in nut-locks, the object being to provide an etlicient and easily operated nut-lock to be embodied in the bolt-and-nut structure and not dependent upon any external device for its o eration.
Afurther object of my invention is to render the action of the locking device positive by the embodiment of a suitable spring.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Writh these objects in view, my invention consists in the construction and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation and central vertical longitudinal section, Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively, detail side and bottom elevations, Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line of Fig. 1, and Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sections taken on the lines z and y, respectively, of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a bolt, and 2 the head thereof. A nut 3 threaded to receive the threads 4 of the bolt 1, is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending ratchet grooves 5. A longitudinally extending recess or channel 6 in the body of the bolt 1, is provided with a longitudinally extending perforation 7 at one extremity, and with a recess 8 at the other, said perforation and said recess being adapted to receive small pivotal Shanks 9 of a rectangular lookin member 10. It is obvious that one of the s anks 9 of the locking member 10 may be inserted in the perforation 7, and that the other will be free to engage with the recess 8, thus adapting the locking member 10 to be free to rock in the channel 6. The member 10 is provided with a bevel edge at 11 in order that it may be adapted to contact with the sides of the ratchet grooves 5 in the nut 3. Secured to the member 1() at the center thereof, is a fiat leaf-spring 12 having diagonally dis posed extremities 13. rlhe spring 12 is riveted at 14 and the points 15 are adapted to engage the bottom of the channel 6. The operation of the lock is shown in Eig. 7. When the nut 3 is rotated, as indicated, the member 10 passes the ratchet grooves 5 freely. But the grooves 5 prevent rotation in the opposite direction since the sides of which are adapted to register with the locking member 1() which presses into engagement by means of the spring 12.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a nut-lock, a threaded bolt and a threaded nut adapted to receive said bolt, longitudinally extending ratchet 'grooves in the threaded portion of said nut, a longitudinal channel in said bolt, a locking member provided with ears or Shanks, a perforation in said channel adapted to receive one of said shanks and a slot or recess to receive the other, a spring centrally secured to said locking member, and said locking member being adapted to register with said ratchet grooves, substantially as described.
2. In a nut-lock, in combination with a bolt and nut therefor, a channel in said bolt provided with a longitudinal perforation at one end and with a recess at the other, a pivotally mounted locking member in said channel having shanks to engage said perforation and said recess, a leaf-spring having diagonally disposed ends secured to said locking member, a plurality of ratchet grooves in said nut, and a bevel edge on said locking member adapted to register and to contact with the sides of said grooves, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. f
PETER PAUL JARGIOK.
