- BOLT-NUT Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 28, 1911, Serial No. 628,998. Renewed July 1, 1913. Serial No. 776,866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL M. HUGHES, citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
The object. of the invention is to facilitate the operation of turning a bolt nut located in a relatively small space; and to this end I provide a cylindrical nut which when arranged in a space barely large enough to receive an ordinary pipe wrench it may be either screwed or un-screwed by the said wrench without detaching the same therefrom.
The above and other objects willappear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a perspective of one embodiment; Fig. 2 is asimilar view of a modified form; Fig. 3 is a plan of the form shown in Fig. 1 showing an ordinary pipe wrench appiled thereto; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the form of nut illustrated in Fig. 2 and another form of pipe wrench applied thereto.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 the nut 5 is cylindrical in contour and annular in cross section and may be formed according to any of the well known methods for making nuts, its bore 6 being screw threaded to engage with the screw threads on a bolt, stud or analogous object. It is manifest that this .form of nut may be in- .serted into a relatively small space and turned with a suitable pipe wrench such as shown in Fig. 3 and designated by the numeral 8, this form of pipe wrench occupying a minimum of space and operating on the nutthe same as it would on an ordinary pipe that is the operation of screwing or unscrewing the nut may be accomplished without detaching the wrench therefrom until after such operation has been performed. It will be observed that this would be impossible with a square or hexagonal nut since the wrench would have to be detached from the nut at the end of each turn, assuming, of course, that the nut is in a comparatively narrow space. What has been said in refer ence to the application of a pipe wrench to a hexagonal or square nut may be taken to apply also to other types of wrenches with the exception, of course, of a ratchet wrench, but the nut turning portion of these lastnamed devices is so extremely large that the size of one which would be capable of turning the work ordinarily required of the wrenches illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, would.
be many times larger than these forms.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 2 the nut 9 is annular in cross section and cylindrical in contour, its bore 10 being screw threaded and its outer face provided with a plurality of longitudinal ribs or teeth 11. The form of pipe wrench illustrated in Fig. 3 may be readily employed with this'device since the ratchet 12 of this wrench is adapted when the handle 13 is moved in one direction to engage with one of the teeth and turn the nut and to override the teeth when the handle is moved in the opposite direction. For imparting and turning movement to the nut opposite to that just described the wrench, of course, Wlll'bB reversed from the position shown in Fig. 4 before being placed upon the nut.
Although I- have shown-and described several forms of my device it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the structure shown. and described, since various changes ,may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, whatis claimed as new is:
1, The combination of a boltnut of annular cross sectional contour, a turningmcm ber for said nut including a yoke member adapted to embrace the nut, and movable engaging means carried by said member for engagement with said nut.
2. The combination of a bolt nut of an nular cross sectional contour having a plurality of longitudinal, tapered teeth upon its outer periphery, and a turning member for said nut including a yoke member adapted to embrace the nut, and engaging means movably mounted upon said yoke member for engagement with the said teeth.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL M. HUGHES.
