Description

(No Model.)
L. J. WILLIAMSON.
NUT- LOCK.
No. 327,213. Patented Sept. 29, 1885.
WI SSES @7 uflwa;
MENTOR:
ATTORNEYS,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS J. WILLIAMSON, OF EAST FAIRFIELD, OHIO.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,213, date-fl September 29, 1885.
Application filed May 16, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIs J. WVILLrAMsoN, of East Fairfield, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved NutLock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccifiation, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of a nut provided with my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional elevation of the same.
The nut A has a recess, B, in its face, aud in the same a latch, O, is pivoted, one end of which projects a short distance into the central aperture, and has its inner end adapted to engage the threads on the bolt.
A spring, D held on the nut and acting on the latch, presses the free end into the central opening of the nut. The key E, also pivoted in the recess B, is provided at one end with the lug F, resting against the latch O, and with the upwardly-projecting lug G, and at the opposite end with the lug H at the corner of the nut, the said lug H projecting from one side of the nut.
By applying a wrench on the nut, or holding the nut in a wrench, the lug G is pressed (No model.)
inward and causes the lug Fto swing the latch G in the direction of the arrow a, Fig. 1,
whereby the end of the said latch is at the edge of the aperture, so as to permit screwing the nut on or off. The moment the Wrench is removed and the key released the spring D swings the latch in the inverse direction of the arrow a and engages it with the thread on the bolt. In case the wrench is so applied as to press the lug H in the direction of the arrow 1) the same result is obtained.
The latch Clocks the nut firmly on the bolt and prevents loosening or unscrewing.
On nuts that do not require to be taken off the key can be left off and only the latch and spring D used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a nut-lock consisting of the recessed nut A, the pivoted latch G, and the pivoted key E, provided at one end with the lug F, resting against the latch, and with the lugs G H, projecting beyond different sides of the nut, whereby the key may be operated upon placing a wrench on any two sides of the nut, substantially as set forth.
LEWIS J. WILLIAMSON.
