Description
W. E. DOOLEY. HAS? POR SUIT UASES. APPLICATION FILED AUG. a
Patented Apr. 13, 1909.
UNITED STATE@ PATENT OFFICE.,
WILLIAM E. DOOLEY, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN BRASS NOVs ELTY COMPANY, OF GRAND HAVEN, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
HAS? FOR SUIT-CASES Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 3, 1908.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Serial No. 446,671.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, IILLIAM E. DOOLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Haven, in the county oi' Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasps for Suit-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exs act description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hasps for suit cases and other like articles, and its object is to simplify and improve the l5 construction, and to provide the device with various new and usel'ul features as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims g reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure l is a perspective of a device ein bodying my invention shown applied to a suit case; Fig. 2 an inside elevation oi the hasp and attaching plate; Fig. 3 a vertical section on the line 3-3 ot' Fig. 2 Fig. e the saine on the line 4-i oi Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a horizontal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all oi the figures.
l represents a plate oi any convenient iorm and dimensions adapted to be secured to the article to which the hasp is applied.- rIhis plate has a marginal iiange 5, whereby a shallow chamber is formed beneath the saine when it is applied, and raised portions e spaced apart forming chambers between which the hasp proper 2 is pivoted, said hasp being provided with a marginal iiange 6, and a stud 3 secured near the mov able end thereoi', having a lateral recess 3a to receive the 40 locking member, or other suitable fastening,
to hold the has when the same is closed.
I/Vit-hin the p ane of the flange 6 is a spring 7 secured in place by the stud 3, at one end, and having its free end bent inward and engaging the T-shaped middle portion of the plate l, which portion is between the raised portions et and severed therefrom by an L- shaped slot 11 extending at each side ot the portion 8 and thence inward toward each other leaving a narrow connecting portion between the portion 8 and the balance of the plate 1. Inserted in the inwardly projecting ends of the slots ll are hooks l0, which pivot-ally connect the hasp with the plate l and retain the same in place. Lateral lugs 9 on the iiange 6 enter the vertical portions ot the slots 1l and are turned outward therein to the inner sides ot the raised portions i ot' the plate, and thus limit the outward movement of the lia-sp 2, due to the action ot' the spring 7. I am thus able to construct the device with only two sheet metal stamped pieces; the plate and the hasp 2 being pivotally connected to each other by the hooks 10, and limited in relative movement by the lugs 9.
llfhat I claim is :M
1. A hasp comprising plate having two L-shaped openings therethrough and adapted to be attached to a case, a hasp having hooks extending through. the lateral portions of said openings and side lugs extending through the vertical portions of said openings, and engaging the inner surface of' the plate to limit the movement of the hasp.
2. A hasp comprising a plate having a marginal flange, and also having raised portions spaced apart, and also having shapcd openings adjacent said raised portions, a hasp pivotally connected to the plate by hooks exteinling through the lateral portions of said openings, lugs on the hasp engaging the inner surface of the raised portion and a spring attached to the hasp and engaging the plate between said springs.
3. A liasp comprising a plate having a marginal flange and raised portions spaced apart, and also having opcnin therethrough adjacent to raised portions, a hasp member pivotally connected to the plate by hooks extending through said openings and also having lugs extending through said openin, and bent outward to engage the raised poitions of said plate, and a spring attached to said hasp at one end and engaging the plate at the other end.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. DOOLEY.
