UNITED STATES A ENT. ormon;
MILO W.-BENJAMIN, OF WATERLOO, IO WA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO AUGUST MERCURIO,
OF BLACKHAWK COUNTY, IOWA.
DISPLAY-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -MILO W. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Waterloo, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and fi'fl'eful Improvements in Display-Stands, of 1 "which the following is a specification, refer which will be sanitary.
'scri accompanying drawingsgin which- With the above and other objects-n1 view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully deiaed and claimed, and illustrated in the Figure 1 is a pore ective view of theimproved display stan showin the same composed of two sections both 0 which are artiallg oplen to permit of access to the'fru1t or goo s t erein; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View.
The invention comprises a body 1 of open rectangular or other form and supported, preferably,-but not necessarily, ina downwardly and forwardly inclined position upon supporting legs 2. The body 1 may have one or more sections, but as illustrated, two are rovided and they are designated a and I). Said body lis com osed of longitudinal or front and rear side liars 3 united by end bars 4 and an intermediate cross bar 5, which latter forms a partition to se arate the sections or compartments a, I). he bottoms of the two compartments or sections are formed by stretching woven wire fabric 6, or equivalent foraminous material, over the body or frame and securing it to the bars 3, 4 and 5x Thisforaminous or imperforate bottom 6 permite the fruit or other goods in the compartments a, b to have proper ventilation, thereby rendering the device sanitary and enabling perishable goods to be more readily kept for a longer perlod of time.
For the purpose of permitting the fruit or other goods in the compartments a, b to be displayed and at the same time protected against theft and from flies and other insects, removable screen covers 7 of flexible woven wire fabric are provided. The edges of said covers 7 are shdably arranged in guides 8 formed by channeled metal bars secured to the top of the body or frame 1 and extending from front to rear thereof. The middle or' intermediate guide is channeled upon both of its sides to serve as a guide for both of the covers, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Said covers are automatically actuated to their open position by means of weights 9 in the form of cross bars secured to the rear edges of said covers, the latter being adapted to run over anti-friction rollers 10 'ournaled at the back or rear of the body 1 etween the bars 8.
To more effectively guide the covers 7, transverse guide rods '11 are provided between the bars 8.in advance of the anti-fric' tion rollers 10 so as to hold said covers down upon the same. Secured to the front or forward edges of the covers 7 are reinforcing bars 12, the ends of which slide in the guide 11 and upon the central portions of each I rovide suitable catches or looks 13 to engage eepers 14 upon the front side bar 3 of the frame. The catches or looks 13 are adapted to secure the covers in their closed posltion so as to protect the contents of the compartments of the stand from flies and insects and also from being stolen when the stand is unattended; and when said catches or locks are released from their'keepers 14, the covers will be gravity actuated to their open position by reason of the weights 9 carrying the back or rear portions of the coversover the rollers 10 and downwardly behind the de- V166.
- If desired,'removable trays or baskets 15 constructed preferably of woven wire, as shown, may be arranged in the compartments a, b, as illustrated in the drawings.
vFrom the foregoing it will be seen that the invention provides a stand es ecially adapted for fruit, vegetables or ot er perisha le oods, which is highly sanitary, strong and urable and easy to open and close.
, Having thus described the invention whet 'isclaime is: A display stand of the character described comprismg a body having a. foraminous bot-' 5 tom, guides at its edges, a. flexible cover of woven wire slidably engaged! with said guides, a. roller over which said cover passes,-
'tening the front end of the cover and (so-acting fasmeans upon the reinforcing bar and body to retain the cover in its closed position. v
In testimony'whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
