LEWIS HAYNER, OF CLIFTON PARK, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 91,743, dated June 22, 1869.
I IIIPROVEMENT IN COAL-BUCKETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS HAYNER, of Clifton Park, in the county of Saratoga, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goal-Pails or Buckets for filling self-feeding coal-burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever, they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to coal-pails or buckets for filling self-feeding coal-burners; and consists in con-. 'structing a bucket with a hinged bottom, to be held in place by a spring-catch, and released at will by a chain, or other suitable device.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my bucket, showing its manner of construction and application.
In filling self-feeding coal-burners, it is desirable always to do so, if possible,,withcut allowing any of the dust or dirt from the coal to be deposited upon the floor, or to fly about the room to settle upon and soil the furniture.
The object of my invention is to produce a bucket or pail suitable for that purpose.
I construct my bucket A out of any suitable material, and in any desirable form, providing it with a closely-fitting cover, 0, and hinging its bottom D at E, so that it will swing easily downwards, as clearly shown by the red lines in the figure.
To the front side of the bucket I attach a springcatch, F, arranged as shown in the figure, so as to catch and hold the bottom D when in position, and also attach a chain, or other suitable device, G, at one end to the outside of the spring-catch, and pass the other end through the side of the bucket, and attach it to the bottom on the inside, as clearly shown in the figure.
In operating my bucket thus constructed, I test the bottom on the spring-catch; then fill it with coal, and put on the cover, and set it over the opening of the coal-burner.
' This done, I release the bottom, and allow it to drop as rapidly as desired, by means of the chain, and deliver the coal, or, if desired, return it to its place by the same means at any time.
In this way I produce a cheap, simple, useful, and convenient pail or bucket .for filling self-feeding coalbnrners, without the annoyance of dust and dirt.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, is
A coal-pail, or bucket for filling self-feeding coalburners, having its bottom I) hinged, and arranged to be supported by a spring-catch, F, and to be operated by a chain, or other suitable device, G, all constructed substantially as herein described. i
