j IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-enosn'rs.
l The Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may.comermi` `Be it known that I, J AMES N.' DAVIS, oi -Gincin nati, in the county of Hamilton and State lof Ohio, have invented aOombined Water-Closet Priv -Seat i and Urinal; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enableiothers skilled in` the-art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing'forming partor' this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful 4combination of a water-closet privy-seat and urinal` and is animprovement upon certain water-closet devices for which LettersPatent-were granted tome September 5,1865, and July 31, 1866, and numbered, respectively,
`49,731 and 56,724;
The presentiuvention consists in constructing and arrangmg'the seat in such a mannerthat it will swing r or tilt, and prevent a perscnusing itin anmproper manner, that `is toV say, by standing upon it with th'e `feet; the s'eat,ialso,' when not in use, being retained in a Vvertical position, so l that the closet may be used as a urinal, and also as a sink, to receive the contents of slop-pals, chamber-vessels, 85o. l
`The object of the invention is to obtain a simple and practicable lmeans for keeping water-closets in i a cleanly condition, and without rendering them liable to get out of repair, `or having the parts so arranged `tliat they will, when repairs are necessary, be diliicult tofget at and p ut in perfect working order 1n the accompanying drawing- Figure lis a frontview of my invention. `Jigure 2, fa vertical section of the same, taken in i the line :t iig. 1. l'
Similar lettersf of reference indicate like parts.
A represents afstandard or fixed support forthe seat and its attachments.` This standard or support maybe of cast-iron that `would probably be the preferable material. It is hollow, and its lower part a. may b'e described as al cylindricaltube, and its upper part b expands, forming a portionof a hollow sphere;
lhe lower part.V afis provided with a ange, c, by which the standard `or support is secured to the door d of the water-closet,` and the lower part a extends below the door d, or suicientlydownward to admit ofthe foul-pipe being connected to it.
B 'represents a bowl, which is a semi-sphere, or of a form approximating thereto, and may, like the standard: or support A, be of cast-iron, and it is provided at its `upper part with `journals c, at opposite points, which journals are fitted "1in suitable bearings in the upper part of the standard or support, the bowlzbeing about balanced on its journals. y The upper `part of the bowl has a ange,f, all aroundit, and therear side of the upper part b of the Vstandard or support extends upward suciently high to plevent the rear palt of the bowlfdescending below a horizontal position, as the flange f will rest upon it, as shown in iig. 2.
:being suiiiciently heavy to hold the seat C in 'an upshown in red in'ig., 1,) when the i right position, (as seat is notin use.
By having the ,bowl hung on journals, it will be seen that the' seat, when it is used, will assume amore or less inclined position, according to size'or height of the person" upon it, and will further be seen that a person cannot use it by standing upon it.
It is designed to have the seat,"the rear part thereof,
sufficiently near the rearwall of the closet to prevent y a person standing upon its rear part, to obviate the tilting of the bowl.
By this means I dispense with the guard used forA the same purpose-on the seat in my` previous patent of 1865. Y
TheV Water-supply pipe passes through a hole in the upper part of A, and through a curved slot, t', in the bowl B, and is bent or curved so as to 'direct the water around the interior of the bowl. rlhe curved slott", it will be seen, admits of the free tilting movement of the bowl.
Any suitable valve to supply waperpipe may be used, and may be placed immediately in front of the standard or` support, under .the vdoor d, and operated by a hinged platform whenever the latter is stepped upon by 'a person designing" to Yuse the Water-closet,
and any suitable stench-trap may be employed.
The seat G, in consequence 4of being hinged, and
having a weight attached,as shown,- leaves the bowl B fully exposed,so that it `may be conveniently used as a urinal or as a sink to receive slops, &c. I
Ido not claim, separately, the pivoted or tilting bowl B, for that has been previously used, and is shown in my' Letters Patent of 1865. Nor do I claim,
separately, any other part of the device; but I do claim as'uew, and desire to secure by Letters latentf The tilting bowl B, combined with a seat, which forms one arm of a weighted lever, C H D, vwhereby the two vibrate on their centers of motion in arcs of different magnitude, as and for-the purpose described.
JAMES N. DAVIS.
