Letters Patent No. 91,629, dated .Tune 22, 1869. l
IMPROVE!) PICTURE-NAIL.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all who/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HICKMAN, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas, and State di' Nebraska', have invented a new and improved Picture-Nail; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the nrt to niakeand use the same, referencel being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.`
My invention hasfor its object to furnish an im provement in 'picture-nails, by which the cord will be securely held in such a way that the picture cannot be accidentally knocked down, andwhch shall at the same time holdthe cord awayfrom the wall, and be in itself ornamental; and
It consists informing the head of the nailof some ornamental design, and in two parts hinged to each other, and-so foi-ined that thecord may he passed over the shank of the upper part, and pass out between the two parts, so as to be clamped between said parts, and securely held by the weight of the suspendedv picture, as hereinafter moref'ully-deselibed. v
A is the bodyof' the picture-nail, wliich may have a screw-thread-eut upon it or not, as may be desired.
The head of the nailis made in two parts, B and 0. The lower part, B, is formed solid uponor is rigidly attachedto the body A. The upper part, C, is hinged to the part B, as shown in the ligure. Y
The neck of the hinged 4part O is formed with a groove to receive the-cord, and the adjacent sides or faces of the two parts are recessed or grooved, sojthat.: lthe cord may pass out between them so as to hangaway from the wall.
The parts B and Gof the head ot` the picture-nail may be'mad'e of son-ie fanciful or ornamental fornnas, for instance, in the form of a dog s head 'resting' upon his fore paws, as shown in the drawing, or in the form of a fully-opened orlpartially-opened `iiower, or any other suitable device.
Having thus described my invention,
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isvForming the'l heads of picture-nails in two parts, hinged to-each other, and so formed that the cord may'pass 'around a groove in the upper part, amd be clamped between the two parts in such a way as to projecteat the outer ends of the two parts, substantiallyI as, herein shown and described, `and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses HENRY HICKMAN.
