Description
A. D. COOK.
Stove-Pipe Cleaner.
Patented Jurie 22, 1869.
Inn (21110 r I Wi-ZIIQS Y iiniifil e etra La... Patent No. 91,608, dated June 22, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPES- The Schedule referred'tq in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known'that I, ABEL D. 000K, of New Madrid, in the county of New Madrid, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and improved Stove-Pipe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being. had to-the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a view of the elbow of a Stove-pipe to which my iniprovement has been attached.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, part being broken away to show the construction.
Figure- 3 is a. side view of the same, showing the soot-receptacleattached,part being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish animproved means by which the horizontal part of a stovepipe may be cleaned out without taking'down the pipe and without the chance of soiling or dirtying the carpet or room; and
.It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the vertical, and'B the horizontal part of the stove-pipe, the ends of which are made inclined, and are attached to aplate, O, by which. they are connected to each othcr,'and held in their proper relative positions.
The plate C may be a casting, or may be made of sheet-iron, as may be desired or convenient.
I prefer to make it a casting, as being more convenient and satisfactory in' use. 7
The outer-side edges of the plate G are formed with grooved flanges, to receive the edges of the angular part or elbow D of the pipe, or .the edges of a plate attached to said angular part or elbow, so that the part D may be attached and detached conveniently,
and without disturbing the positions of the pipes A and B.
By this construction the "draught of the pipe will be E is a sectionof pipe, the forward end of which is inclined, to correspond with the inclination of the plate 0, and which has a plate attached to said inclined end,
the edges 'of which fit into the grooves of the plate 0, so that when the. .elbow D is removed and section E attached in its place, the said section E may serve as a continuation of v the; horizontalpart of the pipe, all communication between the said horizontal part B and the vertical part A being cut off To the outer end of the section E is secured a rubber bag or other convenient receptacle, F, to receive the soot, as shown in fig. 3.
In clezi-ningout the horizontal part B.of the pipe, the angular part, or elbow D, is detached, and the device E F attached inits place: The S001; is then drawn out of the horizontal part of. the pipe with a suitable scraper, and is received in the bag or receptacle F, so that it may be conveniently carried away. The scraper should be formed in the manner of a post-hole anger, or otherwise, so that it may be passed into the pipe B without pushing the soot before it, and so that when it is drawn out it will draw the soot with it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of the angular or elbow-part D and plate 0 with the horizontal part B and. vertical part A of the pipe or elbow, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The section E and bag or receptacle F, when a used in connect-ion with the plate 0 and pipes A and B, substantially as herein shownand described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention, signed by me, this 22d day of February, 1868.
