HOT-AIR REGISTER.
Application filed March 18, 1915.

Be it known that we, SAMUEL l. BURcEss and JOHN J. Bunonss, citizens of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Air Registers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hot-air registers for heating plants, and has for an object to provide new and improved means for connecting the external or visible portion of the register with the internal sheet metal conduit and other hidden parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the outer or visible parts of the register are maintained in position by being rigidly connected with the heat-conducting pipes located within the wall.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the register, and conducting the heated air from the pipes or conduits through the grille to the exterior atmosphere.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the improved register in front elevation, a corner being broken away to show the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through each of the sides of the register as shown by lines 3-3 upon opposite sides of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the manner of connecting the grille and frame to the conduits being an extension of Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.

The improved register which forms the subject-matter of this application is adapted to be connected to a hot-air pipe or flue shown conventionally at 10 which is located within the wall of the building being heated with an offset or short air duct extending outwardly through the laths and plaster of Specification of Letters Patent.

The outer edges of the oset 12A are flared outwardly to correspond to the bevel 13 of the'frame 14 upon the top and parallel sides, while the bottom is also flared outwardly but on a diHerent angle as shown more particularly at 15 in Figs. 2 and 4 to correspond with the' bevel of the frame 16 along the lower edge.
The grille 17 vis provided along its top and side edges with a bevel margin 18 corresponding to the bevel of the frame 14, and at the bottom is provided with a bevel 19 corresponding to the bevel 16 of the frame. The grille is inserted by being slipped downwardly within and against the bevel 15 of the lower edge of the oset to bind such olfset against the bevel 16 of the frame, and is then forced inwardly against the beveled edges of the offset and to bind such edges against the bevel 13 of the frame on three sides.
It will thus be apparent that the oli'set 12 is enlarged or belled at its outer edge against the beveled edges of the frame, and that the grille 17 inserted within such belled portion serves to bind it against the beveled portions of the frame and prevent its being withdrawn therefrom. To complete the clamping of the grille against the frame and the beveled edges of the conduit, fastening members as the screws 20 are inserted through or in conjunction with any convenient part of the grille to bind such grille in operative position against the edges of the conduit.
Upon its inner side the grille is provided with spaced ears 21, and a deflector plate 22 is hinged between such ears by a rod 22 and a roll 23 of the material of the deHector about such rod. The grille 17 is also provided with segments 24,` and a spring 25 is secured to the deflector 22 as having a curved end as shown at Fig. 2 bears against the segments 24. A handle 26 is also rigidly secured to the deliector, and it is to be understood of course that the segments 24 with the springs 25 bearing against them are constructed substantially with the rod 22 as the center. By this arrangement the manipulation of the handle 26 upon the exterior of the grille serves to move the deflector upon its pivoting rod 22 to any position from closed as shown in full lines to fully open as shown in dotted lines at Fig. 2, and is held by the spring in such adjusted position. The use of the spring bearing continually and bindingly against the segments serves to retain the delector plate at any point of adjustment without the necessity of employing notches or other positive locking means.
`We claim A ln a warm air register' and mounting means therefor, an air duct arranged to project rom a flue, a frame comprising four side members and having an opening therein, the edges of the frame adjacent to the opening being outwardly flared on three sides and inwardly lared on the remaining side, said duct projecting into the opening of the frame, and a grille having its edges beveled to form complementary members with reference to the flared portions neXt adjacent thereto.
