CORNELIOUS COLLINS, OF rWARREN, INDIANA,
Lette/rs Patent No. 91,606, dated .Tune 22, 1869.
vvnvnsnovnn MAcHme ron TURNING Boor-LEGS.
m The Schedule referred to in these. Letters Patent and making part of they same'.
To allV whom 'it' may concern Be it known that I, Commons COLLINS, of Warren, in the county ofHuntington, and State of Indiana, have `invented a new and improved Machine for Turning BootL e g,s; and I do hereby1 declare that the following is a full, clear, an d exact description thereof, which will enable others. skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure 1 represents a plan vortop view of my improved machine for turning boot-legs.
Figure 2 is a-vertical longitudinal section ofthe same.`
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a new machine for'turning boot-legs after they are sewed, to prepare them for the last, its object being to facilitate the turning-process, so' that it can be rapidly carried on. The invention consists chiefly in an adjustable cylindrical support, upon which the boot-leg isdrawn, and in arranging, within said cylinder, straps or rods, that are attached to a treadle, so that they will, when fastened to the boot-straps, and when drawn down by the treadle, turn the boot-leg over the upper edge of the cylinder.
A, in the drawing, represents a platform or table, of suitable size and shape, supported on legs B B, that may, by suitable means, be fastened to the door..
l prefer to so arrange the platform A, by forming a narrow neck.a, on it, that it can be used asa seatfor Between transverse guidesb b, that are arranged on i the surface of the platform, is arranged a transverse] ysliding plate, c, which'is on a level with another-.fixed plate, d, that is secured to theplatform A, as showmL form.
tween them, formed an aperture, which extends clear through the body of the platform.
drical plates C Aand D, respectively, that face each other with theirhollow sides, so as lto form an open cylinder, which can be enlarged by moving the slide c further away from d, and contracted .by moving c nearer to d, by means of the screw.
The upper ends of' the plates O D are turned over, to form channels for aspring-wire, g, which retains the upper part of the cylinder' in the requisite circular E represents a treadle pivoted to one of the supports B, and drawn up by a spring, h.
To it are fastened two rods, t t, with hooks, j j, at their upper ends.
The boot-leg is placed over the cylinder when sewed,
the half, C, of the cylinder heilig laterally adjusted to.
the size of the boot-leg. The hooks j are then fitted through the boot-straps, which are at the upper end of the Vboot-leg, projecting above the ring g.' By then pressing upon the treadle, the boot-leg will be turned into the insidebf the cylinder, and is then ready for i the last. A
During the operation, the attendant may apply his hands to the counter, to help the upward motion of the same.V y s f On this machine, from fty to sixty boot-legs can be turnediu one hour.
Having thus described my invention, ,y
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The wire g, arranged in the upper ends of the semi-cylindrical plates C D, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
Y 2. The slide o, operated by the screw e, and carrying the adjustable semi-cylinder O, substantially as herein shown and described, to operate as specifled. CORNELIOUS COLLINS.
