Letters Patent N 91,577, dated .Tune 22, 1869.
IMPROVE-'n MACHINE FOR MANUFACTURING Roor'ING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 'of the same.
To all whom it ma/y concern Be vit known ,that I, HIRAM. G. SoUr.Es,' oi`; Syra cuse, in the countyv 'of Onondaga, and State of N ew York, have inventedza new andimprovedBooting-r Machine; and I do hereby declarethat the fol-lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in theart to Figure l is a side view of my invention; gigure 2 is a plan view of the roller and frame; an v Figure 3 is a front view of the rolling-bed.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the gures.
This invention relates to certain new and useful irnprovements in the method and apparatus for preparing composition-roofing, whereby a cheap and efficient apparatus is obtained, and the work done in an expeditious manner, as hereinafter more fullyI described.
In the accompanying drawings- A is the'bed on which the roong is' prepared, and a'al is the track, or rails." Y Y B is the spreading-roller, and C the sand-box.
The roong is prepared as follows:
' A piece of 4felting is laid upon the bed A, between the rails a a, as shown by fig. 3, and the hot composion the upper surface of the felting, by a dipper, as usual, or by other suitable means. The het rollerB is then rolled over the track a a, and spreads the tar or composition evenly over the surfaceof the felt. As the spreading-roller B passes over the felt, it is followed'by the sand-box C, which sprinkles sand on the warm composition, and gives its upper surface the proper hard iinish. l'lhe prepared roofing is then removed as soon as Vit has cooled sufficiently, and another piece prepared in the same man- The sand-box G is supported .in the roller-frame l, and has anal-row opening in its bottom, which is closed by a valve, or cover, c, fig. l, saidivalve being operated by a hand-lever, j, so that the sand is let on and shut off, as required, and by these means the sandnish is `distributed to the composition with the greatest facility.
One side `of the roller-frame b', tig. 2, has a hingejoint at g', so that the frame can'be openedI for taking out da cold roller, B, and taking in a hot one in its stea make and use thel same, reference being had to the accompanying drawf ings, forming partof-this specification, in which- The joint g' is held rigidly in a closedV position by a cam-lever, h, but the frame is free to be opened when .the cam-lever is in a raised position.
'tjrepresentsa curved shield, extending forward from the sand=hopper O, and overhanging the roller B. Its
object is `to`protect the operator from .the effect jof the yheat radiating from the roller B1 -The spreading-roller B can have anges on its ends, to guide it along` them, as desired. i
' In laying. the feltingE, iig. 3, between the rails a,
one edge, e, is turned under two or tliree inches, so as to not receive any of the'compositibn or coating, and when the roofing is to be laid, this blank edges serves to cement the sheets together, so that the use of narrow blank strips of felting, for that purpose, is not necessary, as is usually the case.
A-xed cylinder or scraper can be used in the place of the spreading-roller 13, but the roller is preferable, as it works more freely.
In an ordinary apparatus, where the'roong isprepared on-.a bed, A, between rails a a, the composition is poured upon a bed of sand, and the felting laid over all, but in thepresent method the composition is laid on uppermost, and so exposed that it cools readily, and thes'and is distributed in such manner that the trouble of preparing the sand-bed for each sheet, as
heretofore, is avoided. i
I am aware of the patent granted to W. R. Goe, dated August'll, 1866, but as his inventionforms no part of mine, I do not wish to claim it.
Having thus-described my invention,
What I claim as new, and Adesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The roofing-machine herein described, consisting of the opeuffntine, with its jointedside b' g', and fastening 1L, the detachable roller B, and sand-hopper C, having` the shield t and the pivoted' gate jc, operated -by means of `leverj; the frame'being provided with a suitable handle, and all the parts constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein described, for the purpose of preparing rooting, as 'set forth. The above specification of my invention signed by me,` this 13th day of March, 1869.
