RUSSELL H. MINER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-HANGING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,339, dated October 5, 1875; application filed January 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL H. MINER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Paper-Hanging Machines, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in paper-hanging machines, being additional improvements on my patent granted March 3,1874, and numbered 148,129; and consists in the combination, in machine, of an adjustable scraper and paste-equalizer, constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material, in the peculiar form shown in the annexed drawing, and attached to the side of the case by means of thumb-screws passing through slots in the side of the case into nuts fixed to the scraper, whereby it can be readily raised or lowered for adjustment at pleasure.
The object of this invention is to provide means for regulating or governing the quancity of paste, and the equal distribution of the same to the paper by scraping ofi" more or less of the paste, or none at all, as circumstances may require. This scraper is also to be used in connection with an attachment to the under side of the lid, made of similar material, having a beaded edge, and braced thereto, substantially as shown, which serves the double purpose of facilitating the operation of putting in the roll of paper with the lid open, and by closing the lid the end of the paper is passed out through the side of the machine under the pressure-roller.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the rear side of the machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
A represents the case; B, the paste-roller; O, the pressure-roller; D, the paste lying in the bottom of the case. F is a lid, and G a roll of paper. In these respects the machine does not difl'er from my machine patented March 3, 1874. To provide the means hereinbefore stated I attach a scraper, H, to the inside of the case A, having an edge bent inward, and arranged to bear against the surface of the paper by means of thumbscrews I I playing in slots in the side of the case, by means of which, also, the same may be adjusted to bear more or less, or not at all, for removing all surplus paste from the paper, and which serves to equally distribute the paste upon the paper. To the underside of the lid I make a downwardly projecting flange, J, having a round or beaded edge, which bears upon the upper surface of the paper, thereby insuring the paper coming in contact with the pasteroller at all times. The ends of said flange J are braced to the lid by end pieces j. In the inside ends of the case are placed fixed heads a, which serve as guides to direct the paper to the paste-roller.
The manner of placing the roll of paper in the machine is as follows: The lid being open, as seen in dotted. lines, Fig. 2, the roll is laid thereon with the end of the paper over the head of the flange; then by closing the lid, holding the ends of the fingers of the hand onto the paper on the head of the flange, the said flange carries the end of the paper over the paste-roller into the opening beneath the pressure-roller and over the scraper, where it may be grasped for drawing it out, the roll of paper at the same time dropping into place, as seen at G. To insure the contact of the paper with the paste-roller when the roll is nearly all paid out, I place in the center of the roll an iron rod.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The scraper and paste-equalizer H, made with the inwardly-bent edge, in combination with adjusting set-screws I, constructed and arranged substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
2. In a paper-hanging machine, substantially as described, the combination of the flange J with the lid, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A paper-hanging machine composed of the flanged lid F J, rolls B O, paste-receptacle, and adjustable scraper H, substantially as described.
RUSSELL H. MINER. Witnesses:
GEO. H. TIBBITTS, H. B. TIIBBITTS.
