Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, LESTER E. DYKE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Dillon,

provide a device of that kind which can be readily adjusted so as to fit the varying sizes of heads, and when so adjusted will by the reason of its peculiar construction be prevented from turning or otherwise becoming displaced so as to be unable to perform its function.

Another object is to provide an improved weaning band and a novel method for securing the barbs therein.

With these and other objects in view as will more fully hereinafter appear the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the construction illustrated, the nose band is comprised in part of a strip 1 of leather of a length sufficient to extend in the usual manner to opposite sides of the animals head; to the outer face of the strip 1 is secured the inner plate 2 of the band; this member is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal substantially the same in length and Width as the strip 1, and is detachably secured to the latter in any practical manner such as by metallic fasteners 3. The inner plate is further provided with a plurality of rows of equally spaced openings 1, adapted to receive the barbs 5. The latter may be of any well known type and in the present instance are in the form of ordinary wire nails the heads 6, of which are interposed between the inner plate and strip 1. With this construction it is obvious that when the the figure the barbs will be held in position and kept from falling out by reason of their l large heads. in the county of Blaine and State of Oklaf homa, have invented a new and useful Calf- W'eaner, of which the following is a speciii- 5 The outer plate 7, of the weaning band, is preferably formed of a single sheet of corrugated metal, of the same dimensions as the inner plate 2, and is detachably secured to the latter and to the strip 1 by the fasteners 3 entering openings alining with those of the inner plate and strip g the outer band is further provided with a plurality of rows of equally spaced openings, disposed at the top of each furrow and in direct alinement with the openings f1 of the inner band. These openings Jreceive the outer ends of the barbs 5, the pointed ends of whic i radiate from the outei` face of the outer` band. The outer band performs the function of holding the barbs more rigid and in position to prick the dug.

Coming now to the method of fastening the device to the head of the animal, attention is directed to the figure wherein the adjustable cheek straps 8 are shown as having one of their ends riveted or otherwise secured to the inner face and adjacent the opposite ends of the nose band, so as to project at substantially right angles to that member, suitable loops 9, carrying buckles 10, straddle the strip 1, one leg of each loop being interposed between the cheek strap and inner face of the nose strap and secured to the latter by the same fastening means used for the cheek straps. The cheek straps are doubled upon themselves having their terminals engaged by the buckles 10, and in the outer ends carry rings 11, to one of which is secured one end of the head strap 12, while the other carries a loop 13, provided with a buckle 14 adapted to receive the free terminal of the head strap 12, with this construction it is obvious that the cheek and head straps are connected and adjustable, a chin strap 15 of a suitable length has its opposed terminals secured to the rings 11. Riveted or otherwise secured to the opposite ends of the nose band 1, and straddling the saine are short loops 16, carrying metallic rings 17, which support a strap 18, provided with a buckle 19 and designed to fit over the lower jaw of the animal so as to tighten the nose band. This strap is encircled by a metallic ring 20 which carries a link 21 and connection is established between the link 21 and the chin strap 15, by means of a short stra 22, provided with a buckle 23,

plate and strip are secured as illustrated in the function of this construction being to provide a means for tightening the chin strap behind the jaws oi the animal.

With the present construction it will be obvious that the fastenings can be adjusted to tightly lit the heads oi colts and calves and the danger of the weaner becoming turned reduced to a minimum` What is claimed is 1. An animal Weaner embodying a nose band comprising a strip provided with a metallic plate, a corrugated plate carried by said `iifst named plate, a plurality of barbs having one end secured between the strip and the first named plate and their opposite ends projecting beyond the tace ci the corrugated late, 'fastening devices engaged through tie nose band and certain oi the corrugations ci the corrugated plate, and means carried by the weaner for 'fastening the saine to the head oi an animal.

An animal weaner embodying a nose band comprising a strip provided on one face with a perforated metallic plate, a corrugated plate provided with openings at the top of each furrow alining with the opening of the first named plate, a plurality of barbs in said openings and provided at one end With heads interposed between the opposed faces of the strip and the first named plate, fastening devices engaged through the nose band and certain oi the corrugations of the corrugated plate, and means carried by the Weaner for fastening the same to the head oi' the animal.

An animal weaner embodying a curved nose band including a corrugated plate provided with barbs, adjustable cheek straps secured adjacent either end of said nose band, an adjustable head strap connected to said cheek straps, a chin strap operatively connected to the said cheek and head straps, an adjustable strap having its terminals secured to the opposite ends of the nose band and serving to tighten the latter, fastening devices engaged through the nose band and certain oi the corrugations ci the corrugated plate, and an adjustable connection between the last named strap and the said chin strap.

fl. ln a device of the class described, a nose band comprising a main plate, a corrugated plate secured to the main plate, fastening devices engaged through the nose band and certain of the corrngations of the corrugated plate, and spurs projecting from the main plate and through certain ci the convolutions of the corrugated plate.

5. In a device of the class described, a nose band comprising a main plate and a corrugated plate secured to the main plate with certain of its convolutions contacting with the main plate and others spaced therefrom, fastening devices engaged through the nose band and certain of the corruga tions ci' the corrugated plate, and spurs projecting from the main plate and through the spaced ones of the convolutions of the corrugated plate.
