Be it known that we, CHARLES E. SPEOK and FREnERIoK W. HENsonEN, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Marys, in the county'of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful im rovements in Hair-Combs, of w rich the fol owing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in hair combs and more particularly to means for securing ladies back and side combs in the hair.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical fastening device of this character which will effectively lock the comb in the hair so that it cannot drop out or be stolen and which may be conveniently and easily operated and will be invisible when in use.

With the above and other objects in view, of the novel features of construction and the combination and. ar rangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ladys back comb having the invention applied thereto, the locking hook or member being in its released or open position in full lines and in its projected or operative position in dotted lines Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section through the comb on the line of the combined retaining and guide bar; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking hook or member; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the combined retain ing and guide bar Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a slightly modified form of the invention; and Fig. 6 is a detail section taken on the plane indicated by the line 6-6 in Fig. 5.

Referring more particularly to Figs. l to a inclusive of the drawings, 1 denotes a hair comb of any form and construction and 2 the improved locking hook or member. The

latter may be mounted upon any suitable portion of the back or solid part 3 of the comb but, as illustrated, it is pivoted upon the center of the inner or rear face of the same. Saidlocking or retaining hook 2 is in the form of a substantially semi-circular hair engaging prong having its free end a tapered and pointed and its opposing end formed with an inwardly extending pivot arm 5 at the inner end of which latter is a right angularly projecting pivot stud 6 and at the oppo- Specification of Letters Patent.

The pivot 6 is adapted to enter and turn in a bearing opening or recess 8 formed in the back 3 of the comb and it is retained in the same by means of a combined retaining and guide bar 9. The latter extends longitudinally over a portion of the inner or rear face of the comb back and is spaced from the latter sufficiently to receive and guide the hook or prong a in its swinging movement and a portion of said bar bears against the inner end of the arm 5 to retain the pivot 6 in its bearing opening or recess. The finger piece 7 is also adapted to serve as a stop to limit the downward swinging movement of the retaining hook or member, as indicated in dotted linesin Fig. 1. Said combined retaining and guide bar 9' may be secured to the comb back in an suitable manner but its angularly bent ends 10 are preferably sprung into retaining recesses or seats 11 formed in bosses or enlargements 12 on the comb back 3, as clearly shown in 1 Fig. 2. I From the foregoing it will be seen that the j invention is exceedingly simple in construction and may therefore be applied to a comb at a small cost and will be strong and durable in use. It will be noted furthermore, that it is exceedingly easy to manipulate so that j the comb may be quickly locked or unl r r 1 l l l l l l i l l l l l i l l l I locked by simply turning the retaining hook or member from one to the other of its two I positions shown in Fig. 1. When the hook I is swung downwardly it will grip a portion i of the hair in which the comb is placed and 1 will effectively lock the comb so that it cannot possibly drop out and cannot be quickly l jerked out by anyone attempting to steal the comb. When the hook is swung upwardly it releases the hair so that the comb may be removed as readily as one without the invention.

In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings is shown a modified form of the invention in which a metal rivet 6 is substituted as a pivot for the integral pivot stud 6 above described. Said rivet passes through the arm 5 of the retaining hook or member 2 and also through the combined guide and retaining bar 9. In this embodiment of the invention the ends of said bar 9 are sprung into seats or recesses ll in the back of the comb, the bosses 10 being omitted.

It will be understood that the invention may be made of any suitable material and that it may be applied to ladies back and side combs of any form and construction and to other combs to which it is applicable. It will be further understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: A

1. The combination of a comb, a pivotally mounted hook-shaped retaining member and a bar secured at its ends to the comb and extending across said member to guide it and to support and retain it upon the same.

2. The combination of a comb having recesses, a hook-shaped retaining member pivoted to the comb and a combined guiding and retaining bar for said member and having its ends sprung into said recesses in the comb, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a comb having a pivot recess or opening, a retaining member provided with a pivot stud to enter and turn in said recess or opening in the comb and a bar secured at its ends to the comb and adapted to retain said pivot in its recess or opening and to guide said member.

4 The combination of a comb having a pivot recess or opening and other recesses, a hook-shaped retaining member having an arm provided with a pivot stud at one end to enter and turn in said pivot recess or opening in the comb, a combined guiding and retaining bar extending across said member andhaving its ends sprung into said recesses in the comb, and a stop for limiting the swinging movement of said member.
