FRANK FONTN EAU, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMB- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed May 11,1906. Serial No. 316,416.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FONTNEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to combs, and has for its object a means for retaining the same in engagement with the hair.
A further purpose is to provide a cheap, durable, and facile engaging and releasing means.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a back elevation of comb embodying my novel device, Fig. 2, a like elevation, enlarged, of the central portion of the same, showing the parts in open position Fig. 3, a rear view of the back plate, showing the parts in closed position; Fig. 4, a top plan view of the comb, and Fig. 5 a section of back plate on line x of Fig. 3'.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views. i
A represents the body, and B the teeth, of an ordinary comb. Fixed to body by rivets a or otherwise is an ornamental or back plate C. In detail the plate C has midway its extremities, upon its rear face, a semicir'cular recess c and is provided within the recess with a segmental opening c. Fixed in the plate, concentrically disposed in relation to the segmental slot, is a pivotpin D, upon which is pivotally mounted a hook member E. In detail this hook member is cut from flat metal and comprises a flat radial arm c, of springy metal, and a second radial arm e, rectangularly disposed with respect to the arm e and extending to the margin of the recess c. The arm e is extended to form a flat curved hook e2, terminating in a point e3. The upper or free end of the arm e is out- Wardly bent, passing through the slot c', and terminates in a knob F. The inner face of the arm is recessed at G to register with a projection g upon the plate C in vertical alinement with the pivot-pin D.
The operation of the device is as follows: The teeth B of the comb are inserted into the hair in the usual manner, while the member E is in the position shown in Fig. 2-that is, the arm e is at its lowest limit of travel in the slot c and the hook e2 is elevated. After the comb has been completely inserted in the hair the member E, which is pivotally mounted between the body A and plate C, is manually rotated by its knob F until the cavity G of the arm e registers with the projection g upon the plate C, whereby the member E is retained in closed or locked position against accidental displacement. l/Vhile closing the hook e2 passes beneath the hairs and in closed position projects within the plate C and above the lower margin thereof, thereby preventing the escape of the inclosed strands of hair.
While the springpressure of the arm e is suflicient to insure against accidental dislocation of the member E, the pressure is not sufficient to prevent a facile disengagement of the arm and projection g when the knob F is manually pushed.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. ln combination with the body and back plate of a comb, of a pivot-pin in the plate, a projection upon the plate adjacent the pin, a member pivoted upon the pin, a radial spring-arm upon the pivoted member provided With a cavity adapted to register with the projection, and a hook upon the pivoted member extending below the margin of the plate.
2. In combination with the body of a comb, of a plate fixed to the body provided with a segmental opening, a pivot-pin in the plate, a member pivotally mounted upon the pin, an arm upon the pivoted member extending through the slot, and a hook upon said member extending below the margin of the plate.
3. In combination with the body and back plate of a comb, of a pivot-pin in the plate, a member pivoted upon the pin, a radial spring-arm upon the pivoted member, and a hook upon the pivoted member extending below the margin of the plate.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, FRANK FONTN EAU.
