Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. SHADLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila delphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in combs, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character, which will be held in the hair, without the possibility of its dropping out and being lost or broken.

My invention relates especially to that class of combs, known as back or side combs which are used to hold up the hair, and is so constructed that when it is placed in the hair it will be unable to drop out or be pulled out until so desired by the user.

WVith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a back view of my improved comb, showing the movable teeth in the position they assume after having been placed in the hair. Fig. 2, a similar view showing the movable teeth pressed down so that the comb may be placed in or taken out of the hair, Fig. 3, an edge view thereof, and Fig. 4, a sectional view at the line XX of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, the lower portion of the comb being broken away.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents a comb, the upper portion of which is so bent as to form the back B, the top 0 and the front D, from the back portion are cut the teeth E and from this same portion or from the upper solid part thereof is cut the slot F.

G represents the spring which is movably secured to the front and back portion of the comb and G the movable teeth, the bottom portion of which rests upon the top of this spring. These movable teeth are adapted to pass through the slot F formed with the upper portion of the back part of the comb, so that when the comb is placed in the hair, these movable teeth will engage therewith, thus preventing the comb from being removed until so desired by the user, and when it is desired to remove the comb, these teeth are pressed downward, until they pass partly within the slot so that they will rest upon the extension H which is formed above said slot, said extension H is produced from a portion of the metal, which is out from the slot F, by bending it inward, and this extension acts as a guide for the movable teeth G so that when they are pressed downward they will be guided inward until their ends are inside the outer surface of the back of the comb, which will allow said comb to be readily removed.

To enable the user to readily press the movable teeth down or out of engagement with the hair, I provide a plunger I which passes through the top of the comb and is secured to the movable teeth.

In practice the movable teeth are pressed downward against the action of the spring G by the plunger I until they have passed within the slot and rest against the extensionH when the comb may be then inserted in the hair and the plunger let go of when the spring G will at once press the movable teeth G into engagement with the hair and when it is desired to remove the comb this action is reversed.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details here shown as the spring G instead of being horizontal when the teeth are in engagement with the hair might be arched outward and the comb might be curved to fit the curvature of the head instead of straight as here shown.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isv 1. A comb so formed as to have a top, back and front portion, said back portion having a slot formed therein, a spring movably secured between the front and back portions, a movable set of teeth resting upon the spring and passing through the slot formed in the back of the comb and a plunger passing through the top of the comb and secured to the movable teeth, so that they may be pressed down against the action of the spring, as shown.
