ENVELGPQSEAL.
No.- 914 ,918. Specification of Application filed April 18,
Letters Patent. Patented March 9, 1909.
1993. Serial No. 427,901.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY Bannion, a citizen of the United States, residing Huntsville, in the county of Yvllallier and State of Texas, have invented certain new y and usefnl improvements in Envelop-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of receptacles, and more particularly to envelope, and has for an object to provide an envelop with a simple seal by means of which the usual flap of an envelop may be securely engaged with the body portion of the envelop and thus revent opening or tampering with same.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specilic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawings forming a 'portion of this 4 specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar pai-ts in the several views, Figure 1 is a rear view of an envelop slimving the application of the present invention thereto, Fig. 2 is vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of F 1, Fig. .3 is a plan view from the interior of the en-l velop showing the flap in its closed position, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking I tongue, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tongue receiving member, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of my invention.
Referring' now more particularly to the' drawings, there is shown an envelop A of usual construction provided with a flap B, as shown. The flap B is provided with the usual gummed surface C. rlhe rear wall l) of the envelop upon its inner side is provided with a metallic member 10 substantially wedge shaped, and this member is provided with oppositely extending lateral arms 11 and 12 respectively which are secured to the portion D of the envelop by means of rivets or suitable fastening devices 18 provided outwardly of the portion B of the envelop with washers 14. The member 10 above the arms 11 and 12 respectively is provided with an inwardly extending tongue 15 at each side, for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and beneath the arms 12 and 11 rei spectively the member l() at each side is provided with a similar tongue 16. The tongues 15 and 16 respectively are thus arranged in spaced relation to the body portion of the member extending inwardly thereover as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The flap B is provided with a metallic member 17 having tapered side walls 18, and at the lowerl end this member is provided with an arcuate head 19 barbed at each side, as shown at 20. The member 17 is secured to the flap B by means of a rivet 21 similar to the rivets previously described, and this member is arranged with a portion extending below the 'flap B, as shown. lt will thus be seen that the gummed portion C of the flap B may be moistened in the usual manner, alter which, the lap may be engaged with the portion D of the envelop, and upon the outer side thereof. ln fastening the ilap B to the portion l) of the envelop, the member 17 is disposed within the envelop, and the head 19 is inserted between the tongues 15, and is finali Y moved in a downward direction and bet 'een the tongues 16. After the head 19 has passed the lower edges of the tongues 16, it is obvious that the barbed portions 20 of the head will securely engage the tongues 16 and effectively prevent withdrawal of the member 17. it will thus be seen that a simple device is pro rided which may be stamped from sheet material, and which will eifectivel* serve to prevent tampering with the envelop without detection.
While the device is especially adapted for envelops, it will of course be understood that the same may be used in connection with candy boxes or similar' pasteboard receptacles.
ln the modified form of my invention shown in `Fig. 6, the locking tongue is provided at its center with a relatively broad portion 22, and at each side thereof the tongue is provided with tapered or reduced portions 24 and respectively. The barbed portions of the member 17 are offset in opposite directions, as shown, to effect a perfect locking engagement with the tongues 16 previously described.
As shown in Fig. 5, the member 10 and the portions carried thereby re formed of a sheet metal plate, the sides thereof being split inwardly to form the tongues 15 and 16, the latter being bent inwardly over the iaoe of the portion l0. The arms ll and 12 are formed by the portions of the plate between the s lits.
VVh-at is o aimed is:
The combination with an envelop having a closing lap, of a wedge-shaped plate located within the envelop with its major end directed upwardly, pairs of tongues Carried by the edges oi the plate at the upper and lower portions thereof, said tongues being bent to extend inwardly over the inner face of the plate and in spaced relation thereto, said pair of tongues being spaced apart vertically;Y oppositely extending lateral arms carried by tne plate between the tongues,
said arms being secured to the envelop, and a downwardly tapered metallic member oarried by the closing flap of the envelop, and having laterally extending barbs at its lower end, said member being arranged for passage l between the wedge-shaped plate and the tongues for engagement of its barbs beneath the lower tongues.
ln testimony whereof l affix iny signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY BENNICK.
