Description

OID.
FASTENING FOR HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,149, dated July 27, 1852.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENDERSON, of Harford county, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvenient on Haine-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof this specification, in which- Figure I is a connected view of the whole, and Fig. II a view of the parts separately.
Let Z2, d, e, f, represent a crooked lever, and c, a ring, both being made of iron, brass, or other durable metal. The lever has a round or square opening e, in one end, large enough to receive a strong leather thong or strap g, and is bent with a short curve atb, so as to bring the part at f about one half an inch nearer the center of the opening e, than the curve b, is to the said center. It is bent again at f, so that the point CZ may stand in a straight line with the centers of the opening e and the curve Z). This lever is fastened to the lower end of one side of the hames A, A, by the leather thong or strap g passing through the opening e; the ring c is also secured to the lower end of the other side of the hames by the thong a.
Then the hames are to be fastened on the collar, the point Z of the lever is passed through the ring c, and by a slight pressure the ring slides on said lever into the curve I), and is held fast in this position by means of the peculiar construction of the lever. To
unloose the hames the end Z of the leveris thrown back and the ring c drops out. The leather thong a, that holds the ring c, may be formed into a loop and substituted for said ring if desired. This whole arrangementl 1s so simple, that any one who can tie a string can attachit to any hames now in ordinary use; and it is perfectly safe, and free from liability to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention or improvement, I wish it to be understood, that I do not claim, in general terms, the use of a crooked lever and ring, for these llave been applied before to this purpose;
I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The use of this peculiar kind of crooked lever or hook, described above,in which the fulcrum and center of motion are at the short end, and the point of resistance at the curve and in a straight line with the fulcrum and other end, thereby effecting the desired objectwithin itself, and without the combined aid of plate, spring, rivet, or
other fixture ;-whether the same be applied to the fastening of hames, as described above7 or to connecting the ends of chains, as in the case of the chains usually fastened across the middle of wagon-bodies, or to any similar purpose.
