Application filed July 1892. Serial No. 14,628.
To all whorc't may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRIEDRICH VON HEFNER-ALTENECK, Ph. D., a subject of the King of Bavaria, and' resident of No. 10 Hildebrandtsche Privatstrasse, Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and Empire of Germany,
- have invented certain new and useful lm- 4be employed.- Fig. 5 is a Ip rovements in 'Iype-Writers, ol which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a typewriter having a typeroller but without a lrey board, which differs from known typewriters of the type referred to in that the adjustment or movement of. the type as also the impression or printing of the same, requires only a very slight movement of the hand. i
The impression of the type is eli'ected by the employment of an oscillating mechanism provided withl a handle or knob which latter permits of the rigid attachment of the typeroller upon the end of the type roller shait which may project to any de ee re uired from the machine, sothat even y the s ightest movementof the handle, the necessary movement is imparted to the ty e roller to effect the inking of the type rol er and the impression ofthe tylpe. For the adjustment of the type this sight movement of the handle is attained by the movement being regulated to an extent corresponding to the short distance apart of the type upon the .type-roller, without taking intoconsideration the amount of the movement oi the pointerupon the index plate. `This amount of movement in both directions is made clearly apparent by means of a special device which has the effect ot1 increasing or magnifying the extent of the movement,
The invention is illustrated in the accom: panying drawing in which similar characters refer to similarv parts throughout the several views and in which'- y Figure l is a side elevation of a typewriter provided according` to the invention.-
Fig. 2 1s a plan corresponding thereto. Fig. 3 is a front elevation corresponding to Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of anordinary pantographic device which may a modified is an elevalan o form of pantograph and 41ig. 6 tion of a further modified form.
Referrin to the drawing, the type-roller w is provide with type which is so arranged that when developed it would present a draft-board-like appearance although itis not necessary `for the type to` be eX/actly square. The adjustment of the `types for printing and the rinting itself are effected from thekhandle 5, ally, backward. and forward as well as vertically. rlo effect this, the type roller spindle g is movably journaled in a right angled hut not entirel closed frame i, beyond which the spind e projects to the other side oi the writer` The frame i is rotatable upon a spindle, formed by two pivots, which is so guided by a straight and parallel guide, tormed by two arch pieces t, c and guide rod c so that it can move .horizontally and parallel. guide is shown. in Fig. l in the ei't hand position by dotted lines. The type roller spindle g carries within the frame t a toothed wheel a which gears with a movable toothed rod e guided between two ledges and' which is movable in e longitudinal direction towards the frame i, the said rod either directly carrying the handle d, or being prefer". ably connected to a slide c sliding upon a special rail l, upon which` the handle or lmolo is mounted. The toothed rod .e carries on the left a pointer it, which indicates the which is movable later' movement oi the knol) d as required to de-4 termine the printing position upon a draft hoard or like surface r. This adjustment is iirst effected in the raised position, as shown in dotted lines in l oi the-knol) d upon each subsequent pressing down oi the lrnolo, Y,
hy means or which at the same time.
handle d, the type roller and its spindle are' brought into the position indicated hy the dotted lines g and w i). 'llie adjustment is firstv completed or exactly corrected py the knife edge j, attached to the oscillati ing arm 'i failing into'the recesses ofthe comb c fastened to t e frame, as also by a similar knife edge o falling into the recesses of a starwlieel l, upon the ty'oe roller spindle g at the lside of the tooth ro s; The raising of the knob d, and the parte oscillatin with itis asn sisted by a springfliavin a roll the base plate. As the slight movements, the index plate r vlith the (84) letters, not shown in the drawing Iwill also make suoli slight movementthat precision of working will be rendered diicult. To avoid this `an arrangement is provided by means of which the movement u on dex plate is increased and the in en late is made correspondingly larger, *t As es. feathe impression is eihected r Viren raislng the loool) or i.
