MA'NTLE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
' made of pasteboard, in which incandescent mantles for lighting are transported.
Mantles ior inverted burners, such as shown at 2, are usually secured to a base ring 3 of refractory material, this ring having certain projecting lugs 4.. Heretol ore the mantle has been held in the shipping box by the cover pressing these'lugs against a circular paste-board lining or ring, which is inserted and secured within the box. The making and securing oi this inserted support has been an expensive and complicated matter, and adds to the cost of the package.
My invention. is designed to provide a sim ple and improved box in which the inwardly projecting ledge forming the support may be quickly and cheaply formed from the material of the box itself.
In carrying out my invention, I take the ordinary paste-board box, which is preferably cylindrical in cross-section, and crimp or otherwise form an inwardly projecting rib or return in its wall. I then press the two portions of the box toward each other, thus forming a double-thickness rib or inner ledge.
In the drawings, 5 represents the cylindrical paste-board box, and 6 the integral ledge formed as before stated. This ledge is preferably nearer the upper end of the box, so that the cover 7 will hold the mantle basering projections against this ledge. In the box shown, the plain fiat bottom 8 is held in place by beading inwardly the lower end portion 9 of the wall of the box.
The advantages of my invention result from the cheapness and simplicity of the box and its ledge for holding the mantle.
The ledge may be either continuous or in the form of separated projections, and many other changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the box, mantle, the ledge,
820., without departing from my invention.
I claim:-
1. A package comprising a non-metallic box of substantially circular cross section having a double integral inwardly projecting ledge near one end, and a mantle having a base ring resting on the ledge and restrained from injurious side movement by the sides of the box, the box cover preventing substantial endwise movement of the mantle, substantially as described.
2. A package comprising a mantle box of substantially circular cross Section open at one end and having a bottom at the other end held in place by crimping the lower edge of the wall, said box having near the open end an integral inwardly projecting ledge, and a mantle having a ring support resting on the ledge and restrained against substantial movement by the cover and sides of the box, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES H. RUSSELL.
