it consists of nothing more than a handle member: having mounted at one extremity, a semi-hoop to which is attached the message or article to be delivered to the train. This device avoids the necessity of. trains stopping thereby saving time and indirectly labor and train wear as is the result at trains stopping too often particularly expresstrainsd My invention is fully disclosed in the iollowing specification of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each. of the views and in which 1 Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing the; message in its delivering position. 2 is an enlarged detail view oi oneof the for extremities of the cord retaining device. Let the numeral 5 designate a handle having mounted on its upper extremity an overla ing band or U-shaped fastening device 6. T 1s fastening device is secured to the handle member 5.by means'of screws or rivets 7 being assed through openings formed in both the handle 5 and the member 6. TAlso mounted on the u per extremity of the handle 5 and passing between the said handle and the member 6, is a semi-hoop shaped member 8 preferably made of wire or some other yielding material which will give when a slight pressure isapplied thereto. 5 Each extremity of this member 8.is forked by having mounted thereon the parts These parts 9 consist of a Hat portion 10 which are placed adjacent the inner surface of the member 8 and are fastened thereto by means of rivets 12 being passed through apertures formed in both membersS and 10. ln carrying out the invention, the trainman while on a moving train inserts his arm through the loop formed by the cord. By doing this the'tension which is ap lied to the cord from the arm by means 0 the train moving causes the member 8 to yield and allows the cord with themessage to slip over the fork extremities 9 and be pulled out of engagement with the spring members 13. In this way, the message is delivered to a movin train without an delay or trouble.
In t emodified form, substitute for the members 9 spring members 21 composed of a fiat ortion 22 which is connected to the member 8*. by means of rivets 23. The other extremity of the spring member 21 is provided with an eye or loop 24 which is threaded with one extremity of a cord 25, the other extremity of the cord being connected in alike mannerto the corresponding spring members 21-. The handle member 5 is provided with eye screws 26 through which is ongitudinally movable an auxiliary handle 27, the upper extremity of said andle being provided with an eye 28 through which passes the cord 25. Just above the upper eye screw 26 is mounted an eye screw 29 which acts as a guide for the cord 25.
The operation of this modified form is as follows: The trainman'in the same manner as described a ove, places his arm through upper extremity the cord which carries the message (not pulling downwardly on the handle 27,
thereby avoiding the necessity ol the memher 8 yielding as described in Fig. 2. This also prevents any possible chance of the message and cord not being detached. Furthermore the spring members 21 bear against the semi-loop and keep what would be the fork construction, normally closed thus preventing the message and cord from becoming accidentally detached. This modified form is' merely to illustrate that the construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It will be observed that by making the member 8 in the form of an open half or semi-hoop that the order can be easily be placed between the opening provided between the free ends of'the member and permit the trainman to take the order in his hand or quickly insert his arm on the opening between the semi-hoop and detach the order with ease and the open semi-hoop construction is one of the most im ortant "featur s of my invention as it enaliles the easy and quick detachment of the order.
What I claim is:
1. A device -for delivering train orders comprising a handle, a yielding device mounted on the handle and fastening devices mounted on the yielding device for carrying the order said yielding device consisting of a fork or open semi-hoop between which the order is placed.
2. In a device for delivering train orders comprising a handle, a yielding device mounted on. the handle having upper fork extremities, spring members mounted on the yielding device, and a cord held by the fork extremities andthe spring members, said cord having attached thereto the order.
3. A device for delivering orders to moving trains comprising a handle and a yielding device mounted on the upper extremity of the handle which carries the order, said yielding device consisting of an 0 en fork, devices carried by the fork for he (ling and guiding the cord to which the train order is connected and permitting the quick and easy removal of the cord with the train order from the fork.
4. A device for delivering orders to moving trains comprising a handle member, a semi-loop yielding device mounted on the handle member, spring means mounted on. the yielding device on opposite sides of the handle member, and offset devices mounted on th extremities of the yielding member, the said oflset devices and spring means constituting a retaining means for the order, substantially described.
