COMBINED METALLIC CAP AND FASTENER FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,171, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed April 5, 1889. Serial No. 306,083. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IIOsEA WV. LIBBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Boston, in the county of Sulfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Metallic Cap and Fastener for Bottles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a metallic cap and fastener for holding corks in bottles containing aerated liquids, so that when required for use the bottle can be readily opened by simply removing the cap.
The invention consists of a band of thin metal provided with vertical arms, each having a hole at its outer end and a cap of thin metal provided in its center with a pin or pins that pass through the holes in the arms into the cork, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a metallic cap and fastener as applied to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a view of the cap and fastener as in use, the cap being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view of the band or fastener before being bent. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the cap. Fig. 5 shows the fastening-pin connected to a disk instead of a cap. Fig. 6 is a plan or top view of a modified form of cap. Fig. '7 is a section taken on line .1; w. of Fig. (5.

The upper ends of the arms 0 are then bent over the cork, so that the holes (1 are over one another. The cap B is then placed on the bottle, the pin f being passed through the holes d and forced into the cork, which securely holds the same. WVhen it is desired to open the bottle, the cap B is removed, and with it the pin j, which leaves the ends of the arms 0 loose and the cork free to fly or be drawn out.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a disk B, provided with a pin f, which may be used when it is not desired to have the edges of the bottleneck covered.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified cap. In this case the central pin is dispensed with, and three prongs f are formed by cutting the upper surface of the cap and bending the portion down, as shown, to form the prongs. In this case the arms 0 would not be quite so long as their ends with the holes (Z would not be brought to the center of the cork, but a short distance from the center, so that each of the prongs f would pass through a holein the ends of each of'the strips or arms.
Of course the number of arms 0 may be varied as desired 5 but for ordinary use I prefer to have three.
If desired, the cap B may be connected to the band A by a cord or chain, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A cap and fastener for bottles, including two parts, a cap having a pin in the center and a lower part comprising a band hav ing a suitable fastening for securing it around the bottle-neck, and vertical strips having holes at their outer ends and made integral with the'band, substantially as set forth. 2. A cap and fastener for bottles, including two parts, a cap having a pin in the center and a lower part comprising a band having ears at one end and a tongue at the other end for securing it around the bottle-neck, and vertical strips having holes at their outer ends and made integral with the band, substantially as set forth.
