Description

I E. GREENE. PICTURE HANGER. APPLICATION IILEDIM! 11. 1908.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
' l/VVE/VTOB' Fefee Greene I ATTORNEY UNITED sana slgnnr oEEroE.
FEEFEE GREENE, OF (DUSTER, MONTANA.
PICTURE -HANGER.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREENE, residing at Custer, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Picture Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and easily adjusted device for hanging pictures and it comprehends generally a bedy portion adapted to be secured to the wall, a bracket adjustably and pendentl mounted on the said body'that forms a ower rest for the lower edge of the picture frame, and picture cord clamping members that are cooperatively combined with the body portion, to guide the frame hold back cord over the body portion and for clamping the ends thereof in such manner that the ends can be readily drawn in or lengthened to suit the desired tilt or hanging .of the picture frame.
In its more subordinate features, my invention consists in certain details of construction and peculiar combination of parts all of which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is a perspective view that illustrates the manner my invention is used. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3, is a transverse section of the head portion taken on the line 33 on Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a rear erspective view of the complete device and ig. 5, is a view of one of the picture hooks hereinafter again referred to.
In the practical application, my invention embodies a head or body portion a of circular shape, and formed with an annular groove a the purpose of which will be presently explained, and the said head portion is centrall apertured to receive a stout screw b for firm y securing it against the wall or other support on which the picture is to be hung.
cc designate a pair of screw bolts that are passed through the head a, one at each side of its central aperture, each with an aperture boss 0, each carrying a clamp screw d, the said bolts 0 being securely clamped onto the body a by the nuts e-e as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
f designates a supporting bracket formed of a stout wire bent upon itself midway its ends to form a rest f for the lower edge of the picture frame (see dotted lines on Fig. 1), its ends f forming side rods for ad- Specification of Letters Patent.

justably engaging the bosses c in which they are clamped by the screws (Z, it being manifest that the pendent bracketf can be raised or lowered to suit the size of the frame to be hung.
g-g designate a pair of opposing clamping arms each of which has a pendent member g concaved in cross section to form seats for the spreader arms h of a stout coiled spring it that is mounted on a stub boss a projected from the rear side of the body a as clearly shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be also seen that the arms gg have their upper ends widened and curved inwardly toward each other over the circular body to form clamping fingers g-* that are normally held in a tight engagement under a strong spring tension by reason of the spring h engaging the lower ends of the members g below the fulcrums of the said arms, which are provided with an inwardly projected ear that are pivotally mounted on the bolts cc and are made secure by the nuts on the bolts as shown.
To more firmly bight the wire picture cord when the. ends are carried through the clamping faces of the fingers g the said fingers are serrated or notched as at 9 see Fig. 4, and to properly aline the clamping fingers the opposite edges of one of the fingers have flanges g"g that lap the adjacent edges of the other finger and to provide against the cord pulling off the grooved body a when the picture is tilted forwardly the front edges of the clamping arms have guard portions g as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
designate the screws that are entered into the back of the picture frame and to which the lower ends of the picture cord 0; are secured. To provide for firmly holding the looped ends of the wire on the edges the same are in the nature of spring hooks see Fig. 5.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the complete construction, the manner in which my invention is utilized and its advantages will be readily apparent.
By reason of providing clamping members combined with the body portion as stated and shown, the wire cord can be easily raised or lowered by simply pressing the pendent ends of the clamp together against the spring tension and when the picture is adjusted to the desired tilt by releasing the hand pressure on the clamps, they instantly grip the cord and hold it to its adjusted posi- .tions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An appliance for the purposes stated, comprising a body portion adapted to be fastened to a wall, a pair of opposing clamps pivotally mounted on the body and spring held to their closed position, said clamps having pendent extensions.
2. An appliance for hanging pictures comprising a body adapted to be secured to a wall, a bracket pendently and adjustably supported on the said body, and means mounted on the body for gripping the upper portion of the picture hanging cord.
3. The combination with the body portion r of circular shape, a'pair of opposing clamps pivotally mounted on the body and having the clamping ends extended over the upper edge of the body, a s ring mounted on the body that engages t e clamps and holds them closed against each other and a bracket adjustably hung on the body portion.
4. The combination with the body a, having an annular groove the apertured bosses projected from the front face thereof, and the wire bracket whose ends are exmama tendible through the bosses, the latter having clamp screws combined therewith; of a pair of opposing clamping arms pivotally mounted on the body a having pendent handle portions, and upper gripping fingers 1 that curve over the top of the body a, and the coiled spring mounted on the said body a and having its ends spread and held in engagement with the handle members of the clamps as set forth. I
5. As a new article, a picture hanging device, that comprises an annularly grooved body adapted to be screwed onto a wall or other support, apertured bosses having clamp screws projected from its front face, a hanger formed of a spring wire bent to sha e and having its ends paralleled for slidab ly engaging the bosses on the body, a pair of opposing clamps, pivotally mounted on the said body, having pendent arms and curved clamping fingers that have their edges normally tightly closed, and a coiled spring mounted on the body and having the ends s read to engage the pendent portions of the 0 amps all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
