,lo this end I divide the last on lines of cut line partly convex and partly concave as UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS G. FITZ, OF AUBURN, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO FITZ DOUBLE PIVOT LAST COMPANY, OF AUBURN, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1909.
Application filed August 2!, 1908. Serial No. 449,892.
To all whom alt may concern:
Be it known that I, Amos G. FITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
It is a common custom for retail shoe dealers, traveling salesmen and others employed in the sale of shoes to place in the shoe a follower, the top or exposed portion of which is covered with silk, satin, enibossed leather or other material to add to the attractiveness of the shoe. Lasts or followers connected b a pivoted union as at present: constructed, are not. well adapted for this purpose because of the fact that the line of division is so far toward the heel part that it comes in the portion of the last which is exposed in a low shoe like the Oxfordtie.
The object of my invention is to provide a full formed last with a line of division extending so far forward that the entire portion of the last cxposcd will be unbroken.
beginning at a point in the waist portion of the last at or about coincident with the bottom of the front opening in the shoe, when the last. is inserted therein; thence extending rcarwardly and downwardly to the bottom of the last at a poi at at or near the instep. The line of division may be a double curved shown in Figure I, one or more straight linesas shown in Fig. 2, or one or more concave lines in the fore part as shown in Fig. 3, all of which as well as many others are within the spirit and scope of my invention.
In the drawing herein accompanying and making part of this application, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a hollow last embodying my invention. Fig.
2 is a side elevation of a last and shoe with parts of the shoe and parts of the last broken away to show the construction thereof showing a ditl'ercnt line of division and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a last showing still another line of division.
In said drawings represents the heel part of a last. IS the lore part and C a l front: end of the heel union connecting thc parts. the niiion being of such a character as will permit the fore part of the last to be raised upwardly and rcarwardly, the front portion of the heel part pivoting and sliding on the rear in clined surface of the fore part.
In Fig. 1 the dotted lines show the movement of the heel part when about to be inserted in or in being removed from the shoe, the point D of the heel part sliding up on the inclined surface E on the fore part, the llexible cord holding the parts in yieldin engagement during the insertion or reinova of the heel part.
In Fig. l a solid last is shown inserted in a shoe to illustrate its position and operation in the shoe. In this case the shoe has the usual front opening G extending down to the point G and has the usual. tongue H inserted in said openin The last is divided on a line of cut beginning at or about the point (1? extending downwardly and rearwardly as seen at J.
Fig. 3 shows a broken line of division both concave in the fore'part.
When the last is divided in the manner hereinbcfore mentioned the line of division iscntircly concealed within the shoe and the exposed part whether finished in the natural wood or covered with an ornamental covering, is unbroken. In all cases the front end of the heel part turns upwardly and back- \vardly away from the fore part which so far as I am aware is an entirely new feature in the construction of lasts and renders it,
well adapted for other uses than that herein specified. The line of cut beginning at the waist of the last and thence extending rearivai'dly and downwardly to the bottom of the last and the union between the two parts, whereby the lower front portion of the heel part is caused to slide and pivot on the lower rear portion of the fore part are also excccdinly valuable features of my invention as is also the broken line of division whether slraight or curved.
llaving thus described my invention and its use I claim 1. last divided on a line beginning in front of the highest part and thence cxtend-' ing rcarwardly and downwardly and a union pivotally connecting the parts. whereby the art can he turned upwardly and rearward y away from the fore part.
-2. A last divided on a line beginning at the nnisl and thence exlending rearnzu'dly and (lnwnwurdly and a union pivotally connecting the parts, whereby the front end of the heel part can he turned upwardly and reau'nzu'dly anny from the fore part.
mg rearwardly and downwardly and :1 union pivotally connecting the parts, whereby the can he turned upfront end of the heel part we rdly a nd rcu r\\ ardly purl.
away from the fore -1. A last divided on a line beginning at the waist of the lust and thence extending rearwurdly and downwardly, said line of division being composed of a plurality of cuiYcS, and :1 union pivotally parts, whereby the front end of the heel purl;
can be turned upwardly and reurwardly nwuy frnnl the fore part.
5. A last of standard shape divided on a, line beginning at the waist and thence ex- 1 lending rearwardly and dmmxvnrdly and a 5!. A lnsl dwided on a broken line heglnhing at the must portion and thence extendcennecting the union pivolnlly connecting the parts, whereby the from end of the heel purl including :1 portion of the waist can he turned upwardly and rearwzu'dly away from the fore plum,
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of lno subscribing witnesses (his ninetecnlh rl:| of August, 1908.
AMOS G. FITZ.
