, MICHELE LANZARO, OF WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE.
Application filed March 11, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHELE LANZARO, an Italian subject, and resident of West Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a shoe in which the entire upper is made from a one piece blank peculiarly formed and with its edges fashioned so that in the made-up shoe there is but a single and a continuous seam having the course of a winding or nearly complete elongated spiral, and to provide the upper for the shoe with a minimum waste of leather, and, furthermore, to produce a shoe which is unusually conducive to the comfort of the wearer.
The improved shoe is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved shoe shown as for a right foot. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the outer side of the shoe. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the opposite or inner side of the shoe. Fig. 4 is a plan View, on a reduced scale, showing the form of the one piece blank from which the entire shoe upper is constituted. Fig. 5 is a perspective view to illustrate in as graphic a manner as possible the bending, winding or relative dispositions of the parts of the blank preparatory to the stitching.
In the drawings, A represents the vamp or forward portion of the upper, B the lower quarter, C the lower portion of the upper at one side of the shoe in the region of the shank and between the lower quarter and the vamp, D represents the side portion of the upper at the opposite side of the shoe between the. vamp and quarter, the same being continuous and unseamed from the shank portion of the sole to its upper edge, E represents the portion of the upper continuous with the portion D and which constitutes the upper portion of the quarter, F represents the portion of the shoe at the same side as, and above the aforementioned portion G between the upper quarter E and the instep portion, and G represents the instep covering portion which has its location above, or may be considered as forming, the upper portion of the vamp A.

Serial No. 13,693.
With reference to Fig. 4, which shows a plan of the one piece blank from which the upper of the aforementioned shoe is composed, it will be seen that the same comprises an approximately semi-elliptical for ward portion designated. by A to form the vamp, such portion A having rearwardly opposite and separated extensions L and It, the inner edges of these extensions being merged into the rear boundary of the portion A on a continuously curving line as. The extension R is provided with a widened transverse terminal portion G having its internal edge formed on a curve 5 merging into the internal edge of the aforementioned extension R, its outer edge being likewise formed with double convex curvatures (,Z and (F. The extension L is convergent on a curved line 7 from its inner edge to its outer edge. This extension L by its portion B forms the lower quarter of the shoe, and by the part C forms the lower portion of the upper next to the sole and in the region of the shank thereof. The part of the other extension R forms the side D of the upper at the opposite side of the shoe between the Vamp and quarter, the same extending uninterrupted by seam from the shank to its upper edge.
The part F of the blank forms the upper quarter and the transverse terminal Gr forms the instep covering portion as before mentioned. The said blank is bent around as shown in Fig. 5 to form what may be termed elongated convolutions; and the outer edges of the extension R from about the point 9 to and about the point h are stitched to the inner edge of the extension or wing L and the portion of the rear curved edge of the vamp forming portion A comprised between point 9 to the point it.
The external edge portion of the part 41 of the widened terminal G is left unsecured with relation to the vamp forming portion A whereby it is left as a free flap to facilitate putting on and taking off of the shoe. This portion (F has an integrally formed narrow extension J to constitute the tongue of the shoe, which in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5, is designated by J.
I claim A shoe the upper of which is composed of a one piece blank, said blank comprising an approximately semi-elliptical forward portion to form the vamp and such vampforming portion having rearward opposite and separated extensions, one of which extensions forms the lower portion of the quarter and the lower portion of the upper at one side of the shoe in the region of the shank between the quarter and the Vamp, and the other rearward extension being provided with a transverse widened and curved edged terminal, forming the side of the upper at the opposite side of the shoe between the Vamp and quarter and from the'shank to its upper edge, the upper portion of the quarter, the upper portion of the first named side of the upper between the upper quarter the instep portion, and said terminal forming the instep-covering portion, said blank being bent around in elongated conpresence of two subscribing witnesses.
