.MEANS FOR AND METHOD OF DISPLAYING SEWING-MACHINE BELTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Application filed August 31, 1908. Serial No. 450,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it, known that I, JAMES H. Born a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for and Methods of Displaying Sewing-Machine Belts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to a holder for and a method of displaying sewing machine belts; and my ,prima ob ect is to rovide a simple method of displaying sewing machine belts and simple means for prpcticing said method and protecting the e ts.
Heretofore, it has been the common practice to display sewing machine belts, which are of circular cross-section, by hanging them up in stores, or by throwing them u on the counters, where they are exposed to ust and to injury from unnecessary handling and to deterioration f romother causes, According to my improved method, the sewing machine belt is coiled compactly in convolute form, the convolutions lyin in the same plane, the outer convolute being confined so that the inherent resiliencyof the belt will tend to maintain it in its convolute form, and the belt is so held as to practically expose its several convolutions throughout their extent to view. 1
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved sewing-machine-belt holder; Fig. 2 represents the same as it a pears with a sewing machine belt confined t erein and Fig. 3 re resents a sectional view as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2.
In the illustration given, A represents a holder; and B, a sewing machine belt confined therein. v
The holder A. referably comprises a shallow box of circular form having an annular channel of just sufiicient depth to accommodate the convolutions of a sewing machine belt, assuming the convolutions to lie in the same plane. As" shown, the holder comprises a circular disk at equipped peripherally with a laterally turned flange a carrying beltretaining means a, and provided with a central lateral bearing a. equi ped with beltretaining means a. The older may be formed from sheet metal in the form shown in Fig. 1, from which it appears that the belt-retaining means if, carried by the flange a, comprises prongs, or retainers, which normally project outwardly from the free edge of the ange in a lane parallel with the disk a; and the centra bearlng a comprises segments, and the belt-retaining means a comprises radially projecting flanges, or retainers, carried by; said segments. The segments comprising t e central bearing a and the retainers carried by said so ments maybe formed by shearing the meta of the disk so as to form arms in the form of a cross and stamping said arms inwardly, thus forming the segments from the base-portions of the arms of the cross, the extremities of the arms extending outwardly and lying in a plane parallel with the disk at to provide the retainers a. This 0 eration leaves the disk provided with radia slots a The segments which comprise the central bearing, or hub, project from the disk a distance approximately equal to the width of the flange a, thus providing a shallow annular channel a j between the hub and the flan e, said channel being of a depth substantia y equal to the diameter of a cross-section of the sewin machine belt; The distance from the centre bearing or hub to the flange is just eat enough to receive the convolutions o the belt B.
The operation of inserting the belt is performed by windin the belt upon the central bearing or hu while the holder is in the condition shown in Fig. 1. When this operation is completed, the outer convolution of the belt is confined within the flange a, and the resiliency of the belt,or its tendency to unwind, aids in confining the'belt to its annularchannel. This is true, regardless of the presence or absence of the retainers a and a. After the winding operation is completed and the belt inserted, the retainers a may be bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, to ald in retaining the belt in position. The retainers a and a serve to prevent dislod ment of the belt, regardless of any severe iandling which the package may receive, while they do not interfere with the inspection of the convolutions of the belt practically throughout the length of the belt. The belt may also be viewed, to a eater or less extent, do endi u on the i ae of the slots a, from the rea i sid d ofjthe holder.
My method of displaying sewing machine belts, and to im roved holder or use in Y P racticmg said method, enables the belt to e substantially protected, while still open to inspection, and also enables belts to be com actly and neatly stored. T e foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding onl and no undue limitation should be un erstood therefrom.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa 1. A sewing-machine-belt holder, comrising a disk having a short central bearmg pro'ectin from one side thereof and equippe wit integrally formed belt-retainmg means.
2. A sewing-machine-belt holder, comrisin a circular disk having a narrow ateraf flange at its periphery and a central bearing concentric with said flange, equipped with integrally formed belt-retainmg means.
3. A sewing-n achine-belt holder, comrising a circular disk havin a lateral ange at its periphery equipped with beltretalners grqectlng from its free ed e, and a central earing concentric with saigfiange equip d with belt-retainers projecting there rom.
4. A sewing-machine-belt holder, comprising a circular disk having a lateral flange at its peri hery and a central bearing equipped with elt-retaining means, comrismg segments and retainer-arms formed integrally therewith, said segments and retainer-arms stamped from t e material of said disk..
