residin at Rochester, in the county of Monroe an State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' particularly to reels adapted for use in mo-.
tion picture apparatus, and has for its object to. provide a simple and efiicient reel.
-To these ends the improvements are directed particularly to the means for attaching the end of the film strip to the reel; to means.
for providing such a device in which thereareno movable parts or springs to hold the film strip; to means for readily directing the film strip into position to be held by the reel hub; and to means for holdm an' end of the film band while the band is olded to attach it temporarily to the hub. With these and other objects in' view the 1nven-.
tion consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will hereinafter be more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. I
In a film'reel. for motion picture work it is desirable not only that the film be held firmly while the film is being wound u on the reel, but that the end of the 'film be ree to leave the reel when the film is being un-- wound therefrom at considerable speed.

The reel consists of side flanges 1 and 2 supported upon a hub 3 by means of tongues 4 extending from the hub into slots 5 1n the flanges, where they are expanded to hold the parts together. Flange 1 is provided with a mries of small apertures 6 and large apertures 7 one of which is V-shapedat 8 to facilitate loading. This flange IS, in the form shown, used facing the operator. . Coming now to my invention, the. hub 3 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal of sufiicient thickness to' retain'its shape, and
having one edge sheared straight across as at 13. This forms a sharp bending edge for the film band F. The metal is bent into the form of a drum and has the opposite end 14 cient distance for the film band to pass between the ends. The ends, where. spaced .from each other are substantiallyconcentric with each other, thus providing an open passageway or slot 15 extending to the interior of the hub on a line approximatel at a tan-- 'nt to the hub. The metal is nt at 16 mm the periphery of the drum and after a reverse bend 17 terminates in a square edge 18 beneath the upper edge 13. This portion 17 is substantially concentric with the outer wall of the 'dlfum.,
' The operation of my reel is as follows. The film strip F is held at a tangent to hub 3 and pushed into the passage 15, where, as will be obvious, one face i of the strip will be curled by and will lie adjacent to the in-' ner face 19 of hub 3. Theofi'set metal ends cause the film to assume this position. Then the reel'may be turned in the direction of the arrow Fig. 3 or the reel may be held still and the film F turned in-the direction of the broken arrowabout edge 13 causing a sharp bend in the film at B, and causing face f of the film to lie adjacent to the outer face 20 of hub 3. This will hold the film firmly while the convolutions are wound upon the feel. It should benoticed that passage 15 with the straight edge 13 causes the film to be bent practically upon itself with but little more than the thickness of the metal hub between the faces of the film.
It is also important that this structure,
when used as a supply reel, permits the film 10- of the metal strip ofiset from edge-13 a sufiitoo sume the position shown at F from which it will'drew the end from the slot.
It is to be noted that the" straight edges 13 and 14 ektend completely across the reel and are not bent, curved or toothed to clasp or indent thefilm, the film when bent as shown,- being held by its natural elasticity withwits opposite feces in firm contact. with the overlapping meteledges.
When film bend or film is referred to in, this specification and in the claims its use in a broad. sense is intended, that is, l mean it to include the film itself onv any support such as pyroxylin or paper, or the paper or other leader strip such as is used income instances.

3. In a reel, the combination with flanges, of a hub carrying the flanges, said huh being made from strip material bent into a cylinder and having straight ends, one end of the strip being offset from the other end and partially lying beneath said other end,-
the ends of the stripm'aterial being spacedone from the other end substantially-perallel to each other, whereby-e film may be held on the spool by a sharp bendrnede by folding the film about the upper end of the strip material causing the film to lie adjacent to both surfaces of at least at portion of the strip material.
4:.
