Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 25, 1908. Serial No. 423,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM JOHN GRAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jeannette, in the county of West moreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mantel-Panels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accom anying drawing.
This invention re ates to mantel panels and the object thereof is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a semi-transparent mantel panel having fluorescent properties as well as one that can be easily cleaned and less liable to scratch.
The construction entering into the inven- I tion will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a mantel having a panel and screen constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a mantel having a fire place surrounded by a panel. This panel is formed by a backing or board 1 having an opening 2. Secured to the board or panel 1 and surrounding said opening is a frame 8 channelshaped in cross section. Secured to the vertical edges of the backing or board 1 are channel strips 4, said strips confronting the vertical edges of the frame 3. Adapted to be placed in the channel strips 4 and the frame 3 is a plurality of rods or bars 5, said rods or bars to the height of the frame 3 being of a lesser length than the rods or bars extending from the top of the frame 3 to the u per edge of the backing or board 1.

rods or bars may be of any desired color, or
combination of colors, to produce a pleasing effect 01' a color scheme in harmony with the finish of the mantel.
The opening 2 is provided with a hinged screen 6, this screen being formed with channel bars in which are arranged a plurality of vertical rods or bars 7, said rods or bars being preferably semi-transparent, whereby the fire behind the screen will emit a light through the bars or rods 7, and the bars or rods may be made of any desired color to enhance the general appearance of the mantel. The screen 6 can be retained in a closed position by a conventional form of latch or fastener 8.
The panel in its entirety is retained in position by the pilasters 9 of the mantel, and I have illustrated columns 10 arranged in front of the mantel, these columns also being constructed of glass rods and bars.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A panel for mantels comprising a backing having an opening, vertically extending channel strips carried by the front of the backing at each side thereof, a channelshaped frame seated in said opening, transversely extending rods or bars arranged be tween said strips above said frame, transversely extending rods or bars between the sides of the frame and said strips, said rods or bars providing an opalescent surface for said panel, a screen-frame hinged to one side of the channel frame, and vertically extending vitreous bars or rods connected to the screen frame.
