Be it known that I, VVALTER E. BROWN, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crib Attachments for Bedsteads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in a crib attaclnnent for bedsteads; and it consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and convenient device of this character which may be readily applied to a bedstead of any description to form a childs crib and which when not in use may be removed and compactly folded so as to occupy but little space.

The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front or side elevation of a crib attachment for bedsteads or the like constructed in accordance with my invention, the attachment being in its open position; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; showing it applied to the side rail of a bedstead; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on a line 8-8 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of-the device in its folded position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 4.; and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view, showing the fastening means for adjustably mounting the crib bottom frame to the side supporting frame of the crib.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes my improved crib attachment which is adapted to be removably attached to the side rail R of a wood or iron bedstead or to any other suitable support. The device 1 comprises a side supporting frame 2 and a bottom frame 3 which is adjustably and foldably connected at one of its sides to the frame 2 and which has upon its other side means for detachably connecting the same to the wood or iron side rail R of a bed or the like. The side supporting frame 2 comprises two side posts 4 connected by crossed rods or braces 5 which have their ends preferably screwed into the posts 4, as shown at 6. The two upper cross or connecting rods 5 form the side of the crib and in the space between them is arranged diagonally crossed rods or wires 7 which prevent the child from falling off of the side of the bed and at the same time render the device ornamental. The crib bottom frame 3 is preferably constructed of angle-iron sections 8 which are securely united at their ends, and suitable woven wire springs (not shown) are provided to cover the frame, hooks 9 being provided at each of its corners to engage and secure said springs upon the top of the frame. The outer side of the frame 3 is pivotally mounted upon sleeves 10 which are in turn slidably and adjustably mounted upon the posts 4 of the frame 2. he pivotal mounting of the frame 3 is effected by forming upon the lower portions of the sleeves 10 inwardly projecting supporting studs or trunnions 11 which project into bearing openings 12 formed in the ends of the frame 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The sleeves 10 are adjustably secured upon the posts at by means of nuts 13 which are screwed upon the upper threaded ends 14 of said sleeves l0. Said ends 14 are ta oered, as seen in Fig. 6, and are slotted, as shown at 15, so that the nuts 13 cause the spring fingers formed by slotting and tapering the sleeves to firmly engage the post. This adjustment of the sleeves is provided for the purpose or raising and lowering the post of the crib bottom, so that it may be adjusted in the same plane, as the bottom of the bed to which the crib is attached.

In order to hold the side frame 2 and the bottom frame 3 rigidly at right angles to each other when the device is in its open position and also to lock said parts in their folded position, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, I provide at each end of the device a swinging brace 16. The latter has one of its ends pivoted, as at 17, upon one of the posts f and is formed with a longitudinally disposed slot 18 having at its ends offset portions or seats 19 and 20. Projecting through the slots 18 in the braces 16 and coacting with their seat or offset portions 19 and 20 are headed pins or studs 21 21 which are provided upon the ends of the frame 3. When the latter is in its open position, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,

' loosely hinged or pivoted, as shown at 27, to

the pins 21 are seated in the portions 20 of the slots 18, so that said braces support the frames 2 and 3 at right angles to each other, and when the frame 3 is folded downwardly upon the frame 2, so that the pins 21 are seated in the portions 19 of said slots 18, the said frame 3 will be retained in said position, as shown.

The detachable connection of the crib bottom frame 3 with the side rail R of the bedstead is preferably effected by providing adj ustable hooks 22 upon the ends of the frame 8. Said hooks 22 are, as shown, in the form of metal plates which are recessed, as shown at 23, to receive the rail R and hold the same against the side rail of the frame 3, and which are formed with longitudinal slots 24. l adapted to receive adjusting thumb screws i 25 which enter the ends of the frame 3. By loosening the thumb screws 25 it will be seen that the hooks 22 may be readily adjusted to engage bed rails of any size and form.

In order to prevent the child from falling out of the ends of the crib, I may provide folding end frames 26. These frames which may be of any form and construction, are

permit them to be folded down upon the crib bottom frame when the device is not in use. These end frames 26 may be locked in either their opened or then-closed position by slotted braces 28 which are similar in construction and operation to the braces 16.

The construction, use and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that the device provides a simple, inexpensive, durable and very convenient crib which may be readily applied to or removed from the bedstead or the like. By reason of the adjustment of the frame 3 upon the frame 2, the crib or childs bed may be adjusted so that it is on a level with the bed to which it is attached. When the device is not in use it may be removed from the bed- I stead and folded so as to occupy but little s ace.- V Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing fromthe principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is

1. A crib attachment for bedsteads, comprising a side supporting frame consisting of side posts connected by cross bars, sleeves slidably mounted upon said posts, said sleeves being formed with inwardly and laterally projecting supporting studs and having tapered screw threaded ends formed with slots, nuts upon said screw threaded ends to adjustably secure said sleeves upon said posts, a crib bottom frame pivoted between said sleeves, slotted braces pivoted upon said posts, pins or studs upon said bottom frame and coacting with the slots in said braces to hold said bottom frame in either its open or closed position, and means for attaching said bottom frame to a bedstead or the like, substantially as described.
