Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patentes; Feb. e. ieoe.
Application filed May 4, 1%6." Serial No. 815,162.
To all 'whom tt concern: x
'Be it known that CORUS D. S'roLL, a citizen of the United States, residing atKansaSs' City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My. invention relates to improvements in ,advertising devices.
It relates particularly to advertising devices in which the advertising matter is displayed at night by means of light.
Many advertising devicesv employ,d for the representation of characters, such as letters or numerals, a number of incandescent .electric lamps which, when illuminated and properly positioned, form the characters. In such devices, the expense of the lamps and.d providing them with the electric current, is quite expensive.
rlthe object of my, invention isto enable one to obtain, with a fewer number of lamps,
`and consequently at much less expense, the
' in relief to the observer.
effect of havingl the characters, when illuminated, appear in relief against the surface forming the background. y
ln devices in hich light is projectedl through fiat trans ucent devices representing the characters, the characters when illuminated, do not stand in relief but present a flat appearance. In my invention, the translucent Vdevices representing the characters are hollowed, preferably upon their' rear` sides, and the light being projected through the faces and sides inclosing the hollowed portions of the devices show them standing For further increasing this relief eiect, the xface and sides inclosing the hollowed portionsof the devices for transmitting the light are of dierent colors.
@ther novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of my invention-Figure l is a perspective view looking at the rear of the casing. Fig. 2
is a vertical cross sectionl view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the opaque `plates having a light transmitting devlce mounted thereon. Fig. 4 is an elevation View of one of the opaque plates detached. Fig. 5 is .an opaque plate used in connection with the plate shown in Fig. 4.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.;` c
1 denotes a rectangular casing having an opening 2 in its forward side. 'In the casing l are a number of electric lamps 3 ory other 'light producing means. Secured to the forward side of the casing, referably detachably, are a plurality o? vertical opaque plates 4 covering the opening 2. Secured to the forward side of each plate 4 is a translucent device 5, preferably glass, and formed to represent a character, such as a letter or numeral.- Each device 5 has one or more lateral lugs 6 having each a hole in which is a rivet 7 which extends through the adjacent plate 4 and secures the device 5- thereto. In each plate 4 is a transverse hole 8 having the general form of the device 5 adjacent thereto. l One side, preferably the7 Y characters like the letter R, where necessary, Supplementalopaque plates like the one denoted by 11 may be employed to ll in spaces wholly encircled by a portion of a letter.
lt will be obvious that at any time the plates V'4 may be detached and others with different characters mounted upon them may be substituted. lit will also be evident that i 4the outer sides being disposed at right angles to the face and differing in color from the face, the body having ateral integral perforated lugs.
In testimon whereof I affix mysignature in presence o two witnesses. n t
