the opposite ends of the device by the thumbA and ushed outward through discharge slots provided for the purpose.
The device comprises essentially a cylindrical barrel having its ends .more or less closed and formed with thumb-receiving recesses and discharge slots.
This device may be used as a souvenir and for advertising purposes as well as-put tol many other uses when provided with a covering on the barrel having a picture or advertising matter or other decoration thereon.v
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of the device to the end that a decorated covering may be provided on the barrel. When applying such a `covering to the barrel said covering must be held tight-1y on the barrel, it must not be movable endwise thereon; it must be prevented from slipping oli? of the barrel by an endwise movement. It must be protected, particularly at the ends, against wear as the device is carried about while in the pocket, and otherwise used. It vmust be prevented from coming in contact with the decorated covering of contiguous devices when packed in boxes for shi ment and fromy engaging the sides of the box; or if packed in separate boxes from engaging the sides of thev boxes in which they are packed. It must be prevented from engaging a Hat surface when the device is laid thereon.
In accordance with this invention the cylindrical barrel is provided with end caps, which are made independent thereof and which are adapted to be driven onto or otherwise secured to the ends of the barrel, and said end caps are each formed with 4a thumb-receiving recess and with a discharge Jslot, and the internal diameters of said end caps correspond to the external diameter of the barrel so that the end caps extend outward beyond the external surface of the barrel for a short distance and the thickness of the. engaging@ wallsof said end caps is greater than thethiokness of the. decorated coverin e whichV is@ applied to the barrel. The en capsthus: extend.v peripherally be.- yond the decorated, cover and thereby. protect the same. p 4
Figure 1 shows in; perspective acoinholder embodying this invention, the covering on the barrel being partially broken away and the barrel being partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a view of one lend of the barrel.
va represents the cylindrical barrel which may be made of a piece of flat sheet metal bent into cylindrical form, or it may be otherwise formed. Each end of the barrel is formed withl two notches a', a2, arranged at opposite sides thereof.
b and c represent the end caps which are secured to the opposite ends of the barrel. Each end cap is formed at its end with a thumb-receiving recess b, c', which extends down a short distance into its side wall, and is also provided with a discharge slot b2, c2 arranged in its side wall. The internal di- -ameter of each end cap corresponds to the external diameter of the barrel, so that it may be driven onto the end of the barrel and held tightly thereon, or it may be otherwise secured thereto. The end caps are driven onto the barrel until the ends of the barrel engage the ends of the end caps, and when thus assembled one of the notches in the end of the barrel occupies a position opposite the thumb-receiving recess and the other notch occupies a position opposite the discharge slot. The engaging wall of each end cap is lmade of a substantial thickness l to'extend outwardly from the barrel a substantial distance.
d represents a covering which is applied to the barrel. This coverlng is made of any suitable material in sheet form orotherwise, and bent around, or otherwise applied to the barrel, its ends overlapping or abutting.
This cover is made lmuch thinner than the engaging walls of the end caps so that when the device is placed on a at surface it will be supported by said end caps and the covering will be free from contact with the flat surface on which the 'device is laid. These end caps prevent any'endwise movement of the covering and also protect the ends of the covering from wear while the device is being carried about in the pocket.
, 'endmost coins of the end caps and occupy positions opposite the My invention is intended to include any kind of a decorated covering which is a plied to the barrel and which it is desirab e to protect and which will be protected by the end caps constructed substantially as herein shown and described. Within the barrel and at each end thereof a circular plate e is placed and between said plates a s iral spring f is placed which acts to thrust tile circular plates toward the end caps, and
upon each plate a pile of coins is placed and by the action of the spring said piles of coins will be thrust toward the end caps until the piles rest against the discharge slots in theenaging walls thereof. Having thus describe niy invention, what CHARLES S. MARSH.
