Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed September 23, 1908. Serial No. 454,463.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakenan, in the county of Shelby and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The device provided by this invention is designed to open and close slidable doors, such as those of freight-cars, where it is inconvenient to reach and apply force to the central portion of the door for the purpose of moving it, and the device is so constructed and applied that the door can be easily operated.
iVhen read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein an adaptation as applied to a freight-car is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawing, of which Figure 1 is a front view of the device mounted in connection with a freightcar door; and Fig. 2 is a perspective vlew of one of the staples.
Having more particular reference to the drawin 3 designates the car side, and 4 a slidafile door therefor of ordinary construction, the door being shown in full lines in closed position and in dotted lines in open position.
Attached to the car side, above the door, at or about the median line of the saace traversed by the door in movement rom open to closed, or vice versa, is a wrist-pin or other suitable pivot 5, whereon is pivoted the operating device 6. This device comprises a curved arm 7 having a bearing 8 at the upper end thereof for en agement of the wrist-pin, and an upper eg 9 and a lower le 10. These legs project from the arm an converge toward each other and are connected at their outer ends, whereby the one is braced by the other. They are preferably formed of a single piece of material bent into proper sha e. Staples or other suitable projections 11 and 12, having thereon anti-friction rollers 13, are attached to the door, the first being positioned near one edge of the door where its rollers are engageable by arm 7 and the second being positioned at a place removed therefrom Where its rollers are engageable by lower leg 10. On the free end of arm 7 is a hasp 14: arranged toengage a staple 15 on the car side when the door is closed, for the purpose of locking the door.
\Vhen it is desired to open the door, the hasp being free from staple 15, the end of arm 7 is grasped and moved in the direction of movement of the door in opening. On the first movement of arm 7, it will bear against one of the rollers of staple or projection 11 and cause the door to move; and, as this movement proceeds until the leverage of arm 7 against this roller becomes less, leg 10 will have assumed a position ofoperative leverage against a roller of staple or projection 12, and bearing against that roller continue the movement of the door. The door is closed by reversal of this movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination with a slidable door having projections thereon, of an operating device therefor pivoted independently of the door and comprising an arm operable against one of the projections to move the door for a portion of its travel, and a leg operable against another of the projections to move the door for another portion of its travel.
2. The combination with a slidable door, of operating means therefor comprising a device pivoted independently of the door and including an arm and a leg projecting therefrom, a projection so positioned on the door as to be operated upon by the arm to move the door for part of its capable travel, and another projection so positioned on the door as to be operated upon by the leg to move the door for another part of its capable travel.
3. The combination with a slidable door, of operating means therefor comprising a device pivoted independently of the door and including an arm and converging legs projectin therefrom, one leg being braced by the ot er, and a projection on the door against which the arm is operable and another projection on the door against and another projection on the door against which one of the legs is operable. which one of the legs is operable. m
