Description

PATENTED SEPT. 12, 1905.
J. 0. HODG-BNS. SLIDING GATE. APPLIQATION FILED MAY 16,1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES O. HODGENS, OF SAVANNAH, MISSOURI.
SLIDING GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept: 12, 1905.
Application filed May 16 1905. Serial No. 260,708.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, JAMES O. HODGENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,-and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
nThis invention relates to new and useful improvements in sliding gates; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient means for opening and closing the gate from either side thereof by the employment of hand-operated levers which are pivotally connected to the gate in such a manner that as the handle end of a lever is depressed the gate may be swung open, the momentum of the moving gate causing the bar or rod connecting the gate to the lever to pass by a vertical plane in which the lever is mounted and said bar serving to hold the gate either locked or open.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this application and which is a perspective view of my improved gate, showing the same in solid lines closed and in dotted lines open.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates a platform, although the platform is not necessary in constructing a gate in accordance with my. invention, as the same may be dispensed with and the posts of the gate set in the ground.
B designates a post having a grooved wheel B mounted thereon, and O designates a post to which one end of a guide-board D is fixed, the other end of said board being fastened to the post B in the manner shown. The upper edge of said board D is preferably beveled and serves as a guide for a grooved wheel E to ride upon, which wheel is mounted upon a pin F, carried by the end strips G of the gate. Said gate, which may be made of any suitable construction, is provided with a longitudinal strip K, which rides in a grooved pulley I, and the upper longitudinal strip K of the gate is adapted to ride in the grooved pulley B.
O O designate posts set at a suitable distance from the gate, one on either side thereof, and Q designates a lever, one being pivoted 'to each of the posts 0, and pivotally connected to the inner end of one of said levers Q is a rod T, the other end of which is pivotally connected upon a pin T, carried by the longitudinal strip K of the gate.
S designates a rope, one end of which is fastened to the pivot-pin T and passing between rollers J upon the post B has its other end fastened to the inner end of the lever Q, said rope being provided to assist in starting the gate to move in one directionor the other.
In order to assist in guiding the gate in its longitudinal movements, I provide a vertical cross-piece M, the ends of which are fastened to the longitudinal strips of the gate, and the inner face of said cross-piece is adapted to bear againstthe face of the board D.
The operation of my gate is simple and is as follows: When it is desired to open 'the gate when approached in either direction, the operator by merely pulling down on the lever will cause the rope to draw horizontally, and the momentum of the gate will cause the bar to be thrown rearward or toward thepost C.
The bar being in substantially a horizontal position when the gate is opened will have a tendency to hold the gate from accidental closing by pushing on the gate, making it necessary to actuate the lever to raise the bar if it is desired to close the gate The same operation is repeated when it is desired to diametrically opposite, a cross-strip on said gate adapted to contact with one face of said guide-board, a grooved pulley mounted upon the gate and riding upon said board, tilting operating-levers having sliding pivotal conmctions at their inner ends, a bar pivotally connected to one of said levers, and its other whereby the gate may be opened or closed, as set forth.,
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES O. HODGENS.
