Description
W. R. HARRIS. BOARD SETTING TOOL. APPLICATION FILED JULY-10,1908.
Ptented Feb-2 1909.
A TTOHNE Y 8 WILLIAM RAY HARRIS, OF PELIOAN, LOUISIANA.
BOARD-SETTING- TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application-filed July 10, 1908. Serial No. 4=&2,860.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM It. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pelican, in the parish of De Soto and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Board-Setting Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to board-setting tools, and more particularly such as are adapted for the forcing of floor boards, ceiling boards, or the like, tightly together, and which are provided with levers carrying setting blocks and spurred body members adapted to engage the joists and pivotally to carry the levers.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which is adapted to force boards tightly together on their frame members, and which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention, showing the same in operation and applied toone of the joints of a flooring; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device, having a part in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged front view of the invention; and Fig. 4' is .an enlarged plan view.
Before proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide a tool of the class describ'ed, particularly adapted for setting boards tightly together on their supporting frame members, as is necessary in the construction of wood floors or ceilings. In my devioe, I preferably employ a spurred body member adapted to engage either side of one of the frame members of a floor or ceiling, and which pivotally carries a lever. The latter has a setting block arranged thereon which serves to receive the tongue of the board that is to be moved into position. As the lever is moved forward into engagement with the board, the body member is forced outwardly until stopped by the engagement of the spurs with the frame member. To release the body member after the board has been set, a slight blow on the top of the body member is all that is required.
In the specific form shown in the drawings, I provide a body member 1 which is slightly tapered at one end thereof. The body member is provided with a plurality of sharpened spurs 2 on both sides thereof, which project rearwardly toward the tapered portion of the member. Located at the tapered portion of the body member is a recess 3. Pivotally arranged in the recess 3 is a manually o erable lever 4 which has the end 5, which is ocated in the recess, slightly constricted to form a tongue. A pivot pin 6 serves to secure the lever in the recess.
Secured rigidly to the front of the lever 4, and preferably integral therewith, is a setting block 7 having a tapered groove 8 for engaging the tongue of a board, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, a spurred bodymember, a lever pivotally carried by said body member, and a setting block rigidly secured to said lever, said setting block being adapted to engage the tongue of a board so that when said lever is moved, the position of said board is altered.
2. In a device of the class described, a body member having rearwardly disposed spurs at both sides thereof adapted to engage a joist at one side only thereof, said body member having a recess therein, a lever pivotally arranged in said recess, and a grooved setting block rigidly secured to said lever and adapted to engage a board, the forward movement of said lever serving to alter the position of the board and to force said spurs into engagement with said joist to hold said body member in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM RAY HARRIS.
Witnesses: W. W. CARROLL,
J. N. BREAZEALE.
