Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Watch-Bow Attachments 3 an I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, and to characters of ref erence marked t ereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to im rovements in bow-pendants for Watches, loo ets, and the like, and the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel construction of bow-pendant in which the bow is interchan cable.
The invention as for its princi al object to provide a novel construction of owpendant for watches, lockets, and the like, which provides means whereby the bow may be easily and quickly removed and then re placed by various styles or designs of bows, as desired, yet provides a very secure and safe means of ivotally securing the bow-member to the ova of said bow-pendant.
Another object of the resent invention is to provide a sim le, dura 1e and effective re tainin means or operatively securing the bow o a bow-pendant to the pendant of a watch, locket, or the like; and, furthermore, to provide a retaining means which may be gulckly and easily removed or disengaged rom its retaining relation with the bow and pendant, so that the said bow ma be replaced by other styles or design of t e same, as may be desired.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel construction of bow pendant for watches, lockets and the like, hereinafter more fully set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following s ecification, and then finally embodied in t e clauses of the claims which are appended to this specification and which form an essential part of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the upper portion of a watch, locket, or the like, provided with the novel construction of bow-pendant embodying the principles of the present invention. Fi 2 is a detail longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing one manner of ivotally attaching the bow by means of its earin s, and a frictionally arranged split pin in eac bearing to the oval. Fig. 3 is a similar detail longitudinal vertical section of the same, illustrating a slightly modified construction. Fig. 4 is another detail longitudinal vertical section of the same, illustrating another slightly modified form or construction of retaining means. Fig. 5 is a similar detail longitudinal vertical section of the same, illustrating still another modified form or construction of retaining means, and Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section of the same taken on line 66 in said Fig. 5, and looking in the direction of arrow :0.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the said drawings, the reference-character] indicates the complete novel construction of bow-pendants embodying the rinciples of the present invention, the same being ada ted to be attached to a watch-case 2, or otlier similar article of manufacture. The said bow-pendant 1 comprises a hollow or tubular pendant, piece or 0st 3, to the upper end 4 of which is secured: in the usual manner, the oval 5. The said oval 5 is rovided at each end thereof with suitable libles or perforations 6, and is further provided at its upper or top side with an openin 7 for the rece tion in the usual manner 0 the crown 8, t 1e said crown 8 being attached to the stemwinding mechanism by means extending downwardly through the said hollow or tubular pendant, piece or post 3, when the same is used in connection with a watch or the like. Pivotally secured in connection with the perforated ends 6 of the said oval 5 is a bow or member 9 provided with bearings 10, the longitudinal openings 11 of which are brought in alinement or registration with the holes or erforations 6 in the ends of the oval 5. he means for retaining said howmember 9 in its operative relation with said oval 5, is by means of split pins usually comprising a pair of retainers 12, formed with a pair of bowed-arms 13 which engage frictionally with the sides or walls of the longitudinal openings 11 of said bearings 10, sullstantially as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the members of the split pin being connected by means of a connecting or bent element or member 14 upon which is arranged a knob or head 15. The said retainers 12 are inserted in the bearings 10, so that the said knob or head 15 abuts the outer ends of the bearings 10 of the towmember 9, while the lower-arms 13 extend through said longitudinal openings 11 of the bearings and their free-ends 16 projecting into and through the holes or perforations 6 and into the oval 5, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. In this manner, it will be evident, that by means of these split-pins, the bow oscillates between the opposite ends of the oval, and the bow is positively retained in its operative relation to the oval, against any accidental displacement therefrom. Upon the other hand, when it is desired to remove the split lpins, so as to replace the how with another ow of a different style or design, this is easily accomplished by the lacing of a caseopener or knife back of the nob or head 15, and with a slight pressure the pin can be forced from within the bearing and the opening 6 of the oval, as will be clearly understood. In the modification, in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the said bowed arms 13 are slightly bent, as at 16, so as to engage with the inner wall-portions 17 of said oval 5, as shown more particularly in said Fig. 3, thus affording an eflicient and secure holding means for pivotally connecting the bow-meml'ser 9 with the oval 5, provided with the additional holding members 16 to prevent accidental with drawal of the bow from the oval. When it is desired to remove said bow from its opera tive engagement with said oval 5, for the purpose 0 replacing the same with a new or different style of bow-member, or for any other purpose, all that is necessary to be done is to slip a case-opener or pen-knife between the said knob or head 10, and the said bearings 10 of said bow-member 9 and thereby force the said retainers outwardly, thereby disengaging the end-portions 16 from their holding engagement with the inner walls 17 of said oval 5, as will be clearly understood.
Referring now more particularly to Fi 4 of the accompanying drawings, there is il ustrated therein, another slightly modified form of retaining means, comprising a pair of bowed-arms 18, the ends 19 of which are brought together and inserted in a receiving socket 20 of a solid knob or head 21, and there rigidly fixed or secured by means of solder 22, or the like. This said retaining rneans is in all other respects the same as that above described, and o erates to secure the said bow-member 9 to t c said oval 5, in
the same manner, and, may be removed in the same manner as above described.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated therein, another slightly modified form of retaining means which comprises a loop-shaped member 23, to which is secured a hollow knob or head 24, and eX- tending outwardly from said knob or head 24 and integrally connected with said loopmember 23, are a )air of arl'ns 25, each slightly bent outwardly, as at 26, but having straight portions 27 which penetrate through the longitudinal openings 11 of said bearings 10, and through the holes or perforations 6 into the oval. 5. The free ends of said straight portions 27 are provided with seats or grooves 28 which are adapted to engage with the marginal edge-portions 29 of the holes or perforations (i of said oval 5, and thus operatively lock or retain the said bowmember 9 in holding and pivotal engagement with said oval 5, the straight-portions 27 of said retaining means being in frictional engagement with the inner surfaces or walls of said longitudinal openings 11 of the bearings 10, as shown.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the various arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention, as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my lnvention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and as described in the accompanying specification, nor do I confine myself to the direct details of the construction of said parts.
I claim 1. In a bow-pendant for watches, l ockets, and the like, the combination with a. endant, of an oval provided at each end Wit a hole or perforation, a bow-member provided with a pair of bearings, said bearings being ada ted to be brought in registration with sai holes or perforations of said oval, a pair of removable s ring-like retainers within said lon itudina openings of said bearings, and sai holes or erforations of said oval, the free ends of said retainers engaging with said oval to pivotall join said bow-member thereto, substantial y as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a bow-pendant for Watches, lockets, and the like, the combination with a pendant, of an oval provided at each end with a hole or perforation, a bow-mernber provided with a pair of bearings, said bearings being ada ted to be brought in registration with sai holes or perforations of said oval, a pa ir of removable s ring-like retainers within said lon itudina openings of said bearings, and sai holes or perforations of said oval,
and means connected with the free ends of said retainers for engaging the end-walls of said oval, to pivotally join said bow-member thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a bow-pendant for watches, lockets, and the like, the combination with a pendant, of an oval rovided at each end with a hole or perforation, a bow-member provided with a (pair of bearin s, said bearings being ada to to be broug t in registration with sai holes or perforations of said oval, a pair of removable retainers, comprising a knob or head, a pair of bowed-arms secured to said knob or head, said bowed arms bein adapted to pass through said longitudin' l openings of said bearings and penetrate into said oval, and means connected with the free ends of said bowed-arms adapted to enga e with the end-Walls of said oval, to pivotal iy join said bow-member thereto, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a bow-pendant for watches, lockets, and the like, the combination with a pendant piece and its oval, said oval being provided with holes or perforations in each end thereof, of an interchangeable bow-member, provided with a pair of bearings, and a pair of removable retainers adapted to pivotally connect said bow-member with the oval of said pendant-piece, said retainers comprising a knob or head, a air of bowed-arms extending from said'knob or head, said arms being adapted to engage frietionally with the longitudinal openings oi said bearings and penetrate through the holes or openings in the ends of said oval, and means connected with the free-ends of said bowed-sums for operatively engaging with the end-walls of said oval, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
