SNAP-FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1, ADoLrH FRANKEL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
yMy invention relates to the .class of fasteners commonly called-glove fasteners and snap fasteners.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastener that will be simple and cheap in construction, effective in use, and the members of which may be readilyV attached to the goods to be fastened, thejconstruction provided Venabling the complemental members to beV quickly attached to the goods by suitable machinery. y My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be` more fully hereinafter set forth, and'then pointed outin the claims'. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a face view of the male mem-- ber of the fastener; Fig. 1a is a reverse view 0f Fig. 1; Fig. 2 is ay section on line 2, 2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an inside face view of the female member 0f the fastener; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4, 4 in Fig. 3; Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged sections respectively on the lines 5, 5 and 6, 6 of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 is a sectional view, on an exaggerated scale, of the .members of the fasteners assembled.

The numeral 1 indicates the male member of the fastener shown comprising a flat plate having a projection 0r button 2, which may be formed integral with or fastened to said plate in any suitable manner. Projection 2 is shown nearly spherical in shape having the reduced or neck-like part 2a to receive retaining springs of the female member of the fastener. The member 1 is shown provided with holes or slots 3 0n opposite sides of projection 2 to receive prongs 4 extending from a retaining plate 5. The prongs 4 may be struck-out from the metal of retainer plate 5 to pass through the goods 6 and through the holes 3 in member 1 to be clenched over the latter when member 1 and retainer plate 5 are placed on opposite sides of the goods (Fig. 2). The member 1 and retainer 5 are vshown in relatively narrow Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1921.

The'female member 7 of the fastener has a central raised portion 7a and laterally eX- tending base portions 7b to it against the goods 8.l The raised portion 7 a is provided with a hollow extension 7c projecting in the direction of the plane of base portions 7" and between the latter, adapted to receive the male projection or button 2 (Fig. 7). The member 7 may be cheaply made of relatively narrow elongated sheet metal, the parts7, c'beingy struck-out of the metalV in such relation that the cup-like part 7c opposes the goods withoutv protruding thereon. Springs 9 are secured to the raised wall 7d of member 7 to engage and retain male projection or button 2. The free ends 9a of said springs project through slots 10 in the opposite sides of part 7 c of member 7 to enter the reduced part 2a of proj ection'2 when thejlatter is in part 7 to retain said parts together (Fig. 7) The outer endsV of springs 9 are shown secured to wall 7d by loop-like ears 11 struck-out from said wall on opposite sides of cup-part 7, said ends of said springs being pushed into said ears to bev clamped by the latter. Said springs are shown substantially in U-shape whereby their free ends are resilient for engaging projection 2 and to permit ready release of the latter. The ears and springs are on the same side of wall 7d.
The base portions 7b of member 7 are shown provided with holes or slots 12 to receive prongs 13 that project from retaining plate 14 through the goods 8. The retainer 14 is shown in relatively narrow elongated form corresponding to member 7, the retainer and its prongs securely retaining said member on the goods when said parts are assembled as in Fig. 4.
When the complemental members 1 and 7 are secured upon the goods 6 and 8 the projection 2 may be readily pushed into the cup 7c to be retained by the springs 9, and said members may be readily separated. The construction of the parts is such that the male and female members may be readily assembled' on the respective goods 6 and 8 either manually, or by suitable mechanism, whereby the prongs of the retainers may be pushed through the goods and through the holes or slots in the complemental members and clenched on the latter, the retainers providing bearing along the goods to firmly resist strains from the members. While I prefer two springs 9, one or more such springs may be used on member 7.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A fastener comprising complemental members, one of said members having a projection, the other member' having a base and a raised portion provided with a hollow extension to receive said projection, said eX- tension projecting'toward the plane of the base, and a spring on the second named member extending into a slot in the side of said extension to engage said projection therein,said base extending outwardly on opposite sides of said raised portion and ."provided with openings beyond the latter,

2. A fastener member having a base portion and a portion raised therefrom and provided with a hollow extension projecting toward the plane of the base and having a slot, said member having an ear and a spring carried by the ear and extending into said raised portion and provided with openings beyond the raised portion.

A fastener member. having a base portion and an intermediate raised portion have ing an outer wall, a hollow extension from said wall provided witha side slot, a spring enterin said slot, and an ear integral with said wa l receivingfa portion of said spring to hold lit with relation to said extension.
4. A snap fastener comprising complemental members, one of said members comprising an elongated plate having a buttonlilre projection, the other member having a base and a-raised portion-provided with anA outer wall spaced from the base, said wall having a hollow extension projecting toward the plane of the base and provided with a side slot, said wall having an ear, and a spring having one portion secured in said ear and another portion located in said slot to envage'said projection.
