PRINTERS QUOIN.
` Specification of Letters Patent. l
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
K application mea-August 12,1907. serial No. 388,153.
In order that the principles of the inven- Y tion may be clearly understood, I have in the accompanying drawing disclosed one .type or embodiment thereof wherein .is` represented a preferably metallic quoin adapted to be expandedto meet the varying requirements of In said drawings: Figure 1 represents a plan viewof a quoin embodying my invention, a portion thereof being broken away to show the interior construction; Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof, the quoin being represented as non-expanded `or compacted;`Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the quoin with the'preferred embodiment VofV means for expanding the same in accordance with my invention, the quoin being represented as non-expanded; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same construction of (parts but representing the quoin as expande but preserving its rectangular formation; Fig. 5 is an interior plan view of Vone of the members of the quoin which, for purposes of description, is herein denominated the upper Vmember; Fig. 6 is a similar view of what is herein termed the lower member; Fig. 7 is a view of parts similar in construction to those represented in Figs. 3 and 4, but representing the quoin as expanded into .a' non-rectangular formation; and Fig. Sis a perspective view of a form of fulcrum that may beemployed in connection with my invention.
Referring specifically tothe drawing, the quoin typifying the preferred embodimentof the invention is composed of two members 1 and 2, herein respectively termed for convenience of description u per and lower members. Preferably suc members are metallic and one of them, and herein the lower, may be provided with a projecting portion or tongue 3 adapted to be received within a preferably correspondingly shaped recess or opening 4 inthe other member.
It is highly desirable that a quoin be pro- SAMUEL STEPHENS, af
videdwith 'means whereby the exterior op.-
erative faces of the members may be disposedfat such angles as effectively to bind the work in position, and conform if neces- 'sary to uneven surfaces, such as may be afforded4 byV bent chases, uneven furniture, out-of-square blocks and the like.
. Iam aware that it has been attempted to provide a quoin, the faces of which may be disposed out of parallelism. tion, however, I am enabled to provide a quoin, the faces of which may effectively be disposed in parallelism or at any desired angle, with great simplicity` of construction. In the present embodiment of my invention this is most effectively accomplished by providing compound fulcra fixed in position and distinct from the members of the quoin, or provided upon one of them. Herein such fulcra are represented as spreading devices 5 and 6 distinct from the members 2 and 3, being `interposed between them in socketed portions7, 7 and 8,8. It will be apparent, iowever, that within the scope of my invention other forms or constructions of xed fulcra maybe provided. Herein, each of said devices is provided as shown in Fig. 8 with cam portions 9, 10 and 11, the portionsv 9 and 11 beingadapted to cooperate with theraised faces 12 and 13 in the lower member2, the intermediate cam portion 10 being adapted vto coperate with the raised face 14, herein provided upon the upper member l.' It is apparent, however, that any suitable expanding means may be employed instead of that shown. D It is evident that upon imparting a rotative movement to either'or both of the spreading devices 5 and 6l the members 1 and 2 of the quoin are separated from each other to an extent depending upon the degree of rotation of said spread- .ing devices and in opposition to the coil purpose said devices are, in this embodiment of the invention, provided with squared openings 17 to receive a key or the like.
By the use of a vplurality of provisions whereby the quoin members may be separated, I provide in eHect compound fulcra,
By my invenwhich herein are represented by devices separate from the members l and 2. lnasmuch as in this type of the invention the spreading devices rotate upon iixed axes and are not displaced longitudinally of the quoin in the operation thereof, the quoin may be of minimum length.
In order that the quoin may be carefully adjusted to a predetermined position and furthermore in order that the degree of separation of the members may be readily determined at any time, l have provided means herein consisting of one or more scales 18 preferably disposed near opposite ends of the quoin. lf desired, such scales may be provided upon metallic or other strips i9 pinned or otherwise secured to one of the members and overlapping the other, as clearly represented in Fig. 2. If desired, such strip or strips may be provided upon a recessed portion O .I portions of one of the members, so that the exposed surface of the quoin may be smooth and even.
Having thus described one type or embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims.
l. A quoin having a pair of opposed, short, rigid members each having a continuous outer face and a pair of bodily fixed, adjustable fulcra interposed between said members and about which said members rock relatively to each other upon adjustment of said fulcra while maintaining` their rigid nonflexed condition, said fulcra being accessible for adjustment at the side of the quoin when in use, said fulcra being independently adjustable, whereby the outer faces of said members may be relatively inclined throughout their entire length at any desired angle.
2. A quoin having a pair of opposed, short, rigid members, each having a continuous outer face and a pair of fulera mounted for rotation in the plane of the longitudinal axis of said quoin, said fulera being interposed between said members upon opposite sides of the center thereof and accessible for adjustment at the side of the quoin when in use, and about which said members rock relatively to each other upon rotative ade justment of said fulcra, while maintaining their rigid non-flexed condition, said fulcra being independently adjustable, whereby the outer faces of said members may be relatively inclined throughout their entire length at any desired angle.
3. A quoin having a pair of opposed, short, rigid members, each having a continuous outer face and a pair of adjustable fulera interposed between said members and about which said. members roel; relatively to each other upon adjustment of said fulera while maintaining their rigid, non-ilexed cond ition, said fulera being accessible for adjustment at the side of the quoin when in use, said iulcra being independently adjustable, whereby the outer faces of said members may be relatively inclined throughout their entire length at any desired angle,
4i. A quoin having a pair of opposed, short, rigid members, each having a continuousl outer face and a pair of adjustable fulera interposed between said members and about which said members rock relatively to each other upon adjustment of said fulera while maintaining their rigid, nou-ilexed condition, said fulcra heilig accessible for adjustment at the side of the quoin when in use, said ful :ra l'ieing independently adjustable, whereby the outer faces of saidv members may be relatively inclined throughout their entire length at any desired angle, and a scale upon said quoin to indicate the degree of separation of said members at one or both ends thereof.
in testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this speeiiication, in the presence of two subscribing` witnesses.
