Description

MURPHY. Y HOLDER.
I APR. 28, 1908.
T. LAMP om APPLICATION I 91 0,7101. Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
. UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
THOMAS MURPHY, O F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVAIIIA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
I Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
Application filed April 28, 1908. Serial 110,429,764.
To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, THOMAS MURPHY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia '5 and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders, of which the foleasily applied, and which will positively hold the chimney down firmly upon the burner.
My invention consists of the details'of construction set forth in the claim appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a side view of a chimney with a portion of the lamp showing my invention applied. 2, is a view showing my chimney holderdetached from engagement with the chimney,'the ring surrounding the chimney being-tu'rned so that its connection with the depending springs may be more easily seen.
I -'-llike leference characters designate like parts in the several views'. I
' My'holder comprises an elliptical ring 2, formed of light wire and designed to surround the la'mp chimney above the bulging portion thereof, coil springs 5, 5, depending from the ring 2, at opposite points thereon, and. downwardly, extending clamping rods supported from the lower end's'of the springs, eac ro'd being bent at its lower end to form a hook adapted to engage beneath the flange a, of a burner-A. In detail, I construct the ring 2,byforming acoil or eye 3, in the middle 40 of the length of the wire which is to compose the ring and bend said coil or eye downwardly in1a horizontal plane below.thehori-' zontal plane. of ring 2. .After this coil is formed the wire is bent around to form two '45 sides of the ring, the 'ends of the wire being bent into eyes 4, 4, and said eyes bent downwardly in a plane below the horizontal plane of the ringand in the same horizontal plane as the eye '3. Both springs 5, 5, are formed of coils of fine wire, the end coil being. bent out parallel to the axis of the main portion of the spring in order to form eyes 5, 5". The upper eye 5, of one coil is engaged by the eye 3, of the ring 2, while the closed hooks or eyes 4, 4, engage with the upper eye of the other coil. The side clamping rods 6, 6, are formed with closed. hooks 6, which engage with the eyes 5 the lower ends of the rods being inwardly and upwardly bent to form open hooks adapted to engage beneath the outwardly projecting flange a, of the burnerA.
It will be seen that the ring 2, may be expandedto suit chimneys'of various diameters, and that the springs 5, permit the clamp rods to be applied to chimneys of vari-. .ous lengths and to automatically adjust themselves thereto.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A chimney-holder comprisingan elliptical loop formed of a length of wire, said wire at.
its middle, being bent into an eye and the eye bent downward in a horizontal plane below the ring, the ends of the wire bent into eyes and theeyes bent downward in a horizontal plane below that of the ring'and in the same horizontal plane as the eye at the middle of the wire, coiled springs having eyes at'their I ends, the upper eye of one coiled spring linked into the first mentioned eye, the upper eye of the other spring linked in both eyes at the ends of the wire, rods having eyes at their upper ends linked into the lower eyes of thesprings, and hooks at the lower ends ofthe rods. In testimony name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS MURPHY.
