UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS JOSEPH KOCH AND GEORGE WALTER KOCH, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
DOOR-HOOD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, L0U1s J OSEPH KOCH and GEORGE WALTER Kocn, citizens of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Door-Hoods, of which the folowing is a specification.
Our invention relates to hoods for shading doors and windows and protecting door ste s from rain and snow and has for its object t e provision of a hood in which the roof portion 18 formed of a single plate of sheet metal having one edge turned up at an obtuse angle to the surface of the roof to be secured to the lintel of the door, its opposite edge turned downwardly and then curled upwardly to form a gutter, and the side edges bent upwardly at right angles to the roof and then back on itself and extended below the level of the roof to stifien the roof and at the same time form a watershed to prevent the rain water from running over the side edges of the roof.
The constructionof our improved door hood will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view of a fragment of a door showlng our improved hood in position, Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the roof portion, and Fi 3, a cross section of one side edge of the roo portion.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the vlews.
A indicates a door having .the lintel B and the posts C.
Our improved hood consists of a roof portion 1 made of a single plate of sheet metal having one edge bent upwardly at an obtuse an 1e as shown at 2 to be secured to the lintel B y means of nails or screws 3. When secured in osition as shown in Fig. 1 the roof has a pitc away from the door as shown and is braced in this position by means of brace rods 4 riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of the roof 1 adjacent to its lower end, and secured to the door posts 0..
The lower edge of the roof 1 is turned downwardly as shown at 5 and then bent back on itself to form a gutter 6 to carry off the water to one side or the other of the roof.
The two side edges of the roof portion 1 are bent upwardly at right angles to the roof ortion 1 as shown at 7, then back on itse as shown at 8 and has its edge extending below the lower surface of the roof and formed with scallops 9 or other design to add to the appearance of the device. The upwardly extending portion 7 forms a watershed to prevent the water from running overthe sides of roof portion 1 as well as stiffening ribs to hold the roof in a-flat position.
It will be understood that our improved hood is assembled ready to be attached to the door or window which may be accom lished in a very short time and that by turning the four edges of the roof portion 1 as descr1bed 1t is stiffened so as to revent it from bending or buckling either bef dre or after being secured in osition.
aving thus described our invention what we claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, a door hood comprising a plate of sheet metal having one edge bent upwardly at an obtuse angle, the opposite edge bent downwardly and then back on itself forming a utter, the side edges bent at right angles to t e roof portion, and brace rods secured to the roof portion.
2. As an article of manufacture, a door hood comprising a fiat plateof sheet metal having one edge bent upwardly at an obtuse angle thereto to be secured to the lintel of a door, its opposite edge bent downwardly and back on itself to form a gutter, the side edges bent upwardly at right angles to the roof and then backwardly forming stiffening ribs and watersheds, and the free edges extended below the level of the roof portion and decoratlvely out, and brace rods secured adjacent to the lower corners of the roof portion and adapted to be secured to the side posts of a door.
In testimony whereof we hereto aflix our signatures in the resence of two witnesses.
LOUI JOSEPH KOCH. GEORGE WALTER KOCH. Witnesses:
ELMER Q. LOCKYEAR, DAISY FLENTKE.
