v CORNICE-PROTE CTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed January 101 1907- Serial No. 351,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEOPHILUS JOHN- sToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cornice- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what may be termed cornice rotectors. Its objects are to prevent over ow-water from the roof gutter or valley running down upon and defacing or soiling the cornice or house-front; and to effect these ends in a simple and economic manner.
Said invention consists in the detailed construction and arrangement of the device substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure '1 is a broken sectional view of a portion of a house-roof and of the cornice, with said invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective of the invention.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably secure, as by nailing or like manner, along the u per front edge of the house-cornice 2 a meta strip 1 of suitable stiffness or rigidity to maintain itself in position at its unsupported free edge.
extends, of course, the whole length of the cornice and is doubled or folded downward Sald metal-strip or piece forming thereby practically a second plate or extension which is concaved in its upper surface and set at such an angle to said cornice, as to intercept any overflow-water from the roof valley or gutter 3 running down over the same, upon the cornice and house-front thus preventing the defacement or soiling of the same as would otherwise be the case. This is apparent from the fact that the water dripping or flowing down the outstanding or concaved extension of the plate 1 is cut off from the cornice by the intervening chasm thus formed by said outstanding portion. Said metal strip or protector is in practice, painted to preferably correspond in color to that of the cornice and does not detract from the finish thereof but rather forms an ornamental appendage to the cornice.
I claim A house cornice attachment, comprising a guard or plate doubled or folded downwardly and having a forward outstanding portion provided with a lower free edge standing outwardly and spaced off from the cornice, forming an unbridged chasm between said free edge and said cornice for the purpose set forth.
In testimony. whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
THEOPHILUS JOHNSTON.
